I have heard the correct way to check the oil is to run the engine (hot), turn it off and wait about 10 minutes, and then check it when the engine is still warm, but the oil has had enough time to drain back.

I have checked the oil with the above method and the cold method, and haven't really noticed a difference. Still, most of the time though, I use the above method.

Hot, warm or cold, I don't see how it matters as long as you are consistant and comparing apples to apples.

That's what my owners manual says, and it doesn't specify that as a diesel only thing either.

PCV caused mine to burn oil. The rubber section between the PCV valve and the hard plastic line collapsed. Probably have worn valve guides, valve stem seals, or both judging by the puff of blue smoke you described at start-up.

My thoughts on it.

That is probably where I read it then! I couldn't remember where I had seen it.
