Engine and Transmission swap
Engine and Transmission swap
Hey. I have a 99 f150 4x4 that needs an engine. anyway i found a parts truck with a good engine and a 5 speed tranny for $700. I would also like to swap my auto for the manual the only thing is the parts truck is a 2wd. does anyone know what I will all need to do this? Is the output shaft different on the 2wd transmission? will the computer from the 2wd work on the 4x4? will the pedals, master cylinder etc. all bolt up? what about the steering coulum? any thing else? the parts truck is a 97 if that makes a difference.
Thanks

The 4x2 tranny is useless. Well not useless but you will need a different output shaft and extension housing. The 4x4 is different. The hole in the floor on the 99 was moved back 55mm in 99 so the 97-98 manual tranny will not fit in the hole. Take the pedal assy and clutch hydraulics and bolt them in. Your Clutch pedal is bypassed with the automatic so you have to decide if you want the clutch pedal to disengage cruise and to disable the start function if not depressed. You will need a 4x4 tranny. Your 99 has PATS and the 97 PCM doesn't. The 99 PCM receives the speed info and sends it to the instrument cluster and the 97 gets it from the sensor. Easiest solution is to get a chip programmed to remove the auto tranny function and use the 99 PCM. You could also get a 99 manual PCM and get it programmed to your PATS in the instrument cluster.

Thanks for the reply exactly what I was looking for. I'm thinking I might be better off finding a tranny from a 99 4x4. If I get that and a pcm from the same truck will everything pretty much bolt up? I assume I will also need the wiring harness from that truck as well? or will the one from th 97 work?
Thanks

Your 99 still uses coil pack ignition but it has PATS. The 97-98 Years do not. In 2000 the ignition system changed to Coil on Plug. Use your 1999 harness and find a PCM from a 99 4x4 5 speed. There will be a few wires left over but that is no biggie. The best would be to find a 1999 donor truck and the grab the PCM and engine and tranny harnesses.

Thanks again for the reply. so you're saying the harness form the auto will work with the manual? If I find a pcm and tranny from a 99 4x4 5 speed I should be pretty much set? I would love to find a 99 donor truck. but it took me long enough to find the one I have now. not to mention it was under half the price that the wreakers wanted for just an engine.
Thanks
Thanks
The PCM will be looking for signals from the Auto transmission so you will need to get a chip burned to disregard the lack of these signals. Using a PCM from a 5 speed should eliminate this problem.

Hopefully going to be swaping this next week. I havent been able to find a different transmission so I'm going to try and use the one I have. approximatly how much will it cost to have the outputshaft and extension housing swaped? Will either of them from my auto fit on the manual? Is the hole for the shifter already there on these trucks? What will happen if I try to use the PCM from the auto until I can find the proper one?
Thanks

The output shaft is the last piece that comes out of the tranny,,,so,,,it might be cheaper to find the tranny you need then to pay for that job.
