Red face 05 F150 FX4 5.4 Cam Phasers

Ok,

I am new to this site, any help would greatly appreciated. I purchased a 2005 FX4 F150 last week with 43,000 miles. I notice a ticking/knocking in the front after it was warmed up. Loud enough you hear it the truck with the wondows up.... sounds like a big deisel. I mention it to the Salesman and he said they would have it looked at.

The Service Advisor said it was a Cam Phaser. I asked him if it was a big deal he said not really, but it could be eventually. (which is it). They said that it didn't need to be replaced at this time. And if it got worse later then replace it then. Here is the kicker the Dealership I purchased it from gives a 3month 3,000 mile powertrain warranty. Which this should be covered, right? Anyways I found out that it was $1500 to fix it, so are they saying not to fix it now becuase of the warranty to save them $1500 or is it not a problem and I shouldnt worry about it?

What are the chances of it getting worse?

Anyone else have it make the noise after it being replaced?

What type of damage or problems could occur if it is not taking care of?

Thanks for you help,

one

was it a Ford dealer? From what I've read on here, Cam Phasers have no long term reliablity issues. If you can get it fixed under warranty, do it now!! The noise will just get louder and louder. It could be other things, such as a pulley, or just the fuel injector knock. Get it checked out at a Ford Dealer.

It was taken to a Ford Dealership, you would think that if it keeps getting louder something must be getting worse, if it wasn't causing damage wouldn't it not get any louder?

Im just asking!

if the truck is still under warranty, then muster up some *****, and make them fix it! the salesman just does not want to lose some/all of his commission by fixing it for free!

yes, there is updated cam phasers that will fix the problem for good. the 06 and up already have them so they do not have this problem at all.

Could you tell me what actually causes the problem? What actually makes the noise, metal on metal? Touching of 2 peices inside? If you could let me know that would be great!

took my 2004 f-150 screw 5.4L to the dealer today to have same issue looked into. I asked about the cam phasers (mentioned many times on this site), but dealer is claiming that the noise in my truck is from the lifters. Said that for $1118.00 they'd replace all 24 lifters/lash ajusters with a newer PN that will supposedly end the tapping noise. The dealer told me that this issue also won't harm the engine and is only a nuisance. I'm debating myself on what to do, but I'm out of any warranty.

I agree with others, if you have any sort of warranty, get them to fix the issue.

I have a 05 f150 fx4 with a 5.4 and I've been having a loud ticking/knocking noise and it is bogging down really bad it don't want to go for nothing. I've been told by the Ford dealer and other shops that it sounds like the lifts is bad. But I have taken it to this other guy that's not charging me to look and it and he's thinking the bogging down is from the knock sensor or the TOS sensor or the converters are stopped up. I need some help so if anyone has any ideas please let me know.
