Engine shutting off

My god father is having trouble with his work van. When you turn it on, it will only stay on for a couple seconds, then turn off. The only way to keep it on is keep on revving it, and even then, the engine doesn't run smooth, and gives off a different exhaust smell (I've smelt it before, just can't think of what it is.)

There is no SES light on, but I was about to pull a P1000 code (readiness test not passed, or something like that.) Someone told him it might be the fuel pump.

Sorry I don't have much info on the van itself (I'll ask tomorrow) other than it's one of those white Ford work vans (probably E150), 2001. Don't know what engine it is (looking from quick pix online, it might be a 5.4.)

Took this video, to see if it helps any. He turned it on, then kept on revving it, until the end, where the engine just dies when he let off.

Sorry for the lack of information, but maybe you guys could give me some pointers/questions I can ask him.

TIA

Check:

The IAC may be stuck shut. (Controls Cold Idle)

The EGR may be stuck open. ("Suck Test" the valve - KOER)

PCV valve may be plugged. (Inspect valve "Shake")

Was there any problems before this happened? Was it sitting for awhile , might be plugged cats.

Yea, make sure that CEL is working first -KOEO.(Light should be illuminated)

Did the scanner say what monitor hasn't run yet ? Prolly the EVAP. The CEL must be working to shoot a P1000 , I think it has to be.

Put your hand on the fuel pump relay - if hot , it's bad.

Fuel System checks

Standard Fuel Pressures

Fuel Pressure @ idle ~ 30 - 45 psi
Vacuum hose attached ~ 40 - 50 psi
Vacuum hose detached ~ 30 - 40 psi
Fuel system hold pressure (after 5 minutes) ~ 30 - 40 psi
Fuel pump pressure Max ~ 65 psi

Regulator Check

Connect a hand held vacuum pump to the fuel pressure regulator and read fuel pressure w/vac applied. Pressure should decrease as vacuum is increased.

You can also detach the vacuum line from the fuel pressure regulator and verify vacuum is present when the engine is running.

MAF Contamination (Clean) (Check Voltages)

TPS - (Check Voltages)

Disconnect BOTH sides of battery for at least 15 minutes before reboot. (CAUTION: ALWAYS reconnect positive terminal first.)

Was the air cleaner changed recently? Any work done on the van? A massive air leak between the MAF and the throttle body will cause your symptoms.
