I recently had my fan clutch replaced and since then, the new one roars all the time, when the engine is cool or at highway speeds on a cool day. It did not roar at high speed before the switch, only when it really needed more cooling. The old one when working properly would roar on startup for a few seconds then shut down to a light spin, now it just stays at high speed spin. Could the new clutch be bad also, it does the cooling job, but I hate the noise all the time, and I can tell the power loss.

 

Switch to e-fans.

Ummm, you don't have an electric fan clutch on a mechanical fan.

 

It is a none electric, mechanical clutch, no wires what so ever. I have taken a couple of short trips (150 miles each) with the replaced clutch and on the last leg of the second trip, the clutch finally quit running the fan as much at 60 MPH and I could notice the power increase. Once I got back into town though it was back to running all the time and it was only about 60 degrees out and had no reason to howl so much.

 

Did you use a clutch from an auto parts store (if so, which one?) or from Ford?

I am betting you did not put an OEM fan clutch back in due to cost. I ran into this problem with another truck years ago. I learned that aftermarket fan clutches don't work worth a sh*t. I tried several brands and they all either did not cool the engine like the factory one did or they roared (just like yours) like a son of a ... you get the idea. The only fix was to get an OEM one or to go to Efans.

If you did get OEM you ended up with a faulty one take it back.

 

I don't know if it is OEM or not, I had a local mechanic do the job. I am taking it back to hime next week, I'll find out then. What you are saying is that they can run this bad way out of the box new? How do they stay in business?

 

Yes.

I am guessing that most people would not notice that their vehicle is running hotter or that they suddenly have a loud roar because the fan clutch stays engaged all the time or way too long. Most people are clueless mechanically and accept whatever their mechanic tells them as gospel.

 

Aftermarket parts may or may not meet OEM specs. It can be a crapshoot. Look at the problems people with Tritons have with aftermarket DPFE's and Bosch plugs.

 

i have a clutch fan left from my 97 4.6L i took it off to do E-fans its up 4 sale if you want it.

 

its probably a heavy duty fan clutch that he put on, meant for severe cooling duty like on larger trucks or really nasty hauling type work.

 

Well yesterday, my mechanic replaced the aftermarket clutch with an OEM, and BINGO, back to normal sound, no more 747 at takeoff, yea. Thanks for the advice. How did we live before the internet and forums.
