there are virtually limitless ways to add more hp then just those two things, you need to be more specific as what you want to do and what you dont want to do

full exhaust, headers, etc. port + polish the heads, regearing will bring the power down to the bottom end, cams, supercharger/turbo, etc. none of this is cheap, i know, lol...

i personally like LT headers as a start for below 1k. gears will make a surprising difference, or wake up call if you will.

how much power are you looking to put out? an exhaust system that yields true gains is not cheap. my longtube headers alone were $800 for ~30-35hp and ft/lbs. that's not including my true dual system, high flow cats, x pipe. if you want real power its gonna cost you. other options may include underdrive pulleys to free up hp used by the crank, they're not too expensive for moderate gains. things like this work in systems, one upgrade may not yield much power, but another related one will typically yield more horsepower than the sum of the individual ones.

once you are pushing enough power you'll have other things to worry about, like upgrading the transmission components to keep it from coming apart, as well as the rods/pistons, etc.

probably, like i said, it will be done on a weekend that will probably extend into the preceding and proceeding week... anyone nearby in FL that wants to help is more than welcome... its a pain b/c its my DD, but i tend to have a lead foot, and cannot risk breaking something w/ the POS stock cast internals. The engine is too new imo to warrant the cost of buying another and dropping it in.

i also need to regear turning 35'' tires along with everything else. i'm probably going to do 4.56's, but i need to read more on the procedure before i crack open my diffs.

yeah, lol. i forgot about you there for a second, trimble. maybe i'll rent an engine stand and crane, and we'll pull my engine out over at your dad's, build it up, put it back it in, and then build your new one.

i forgot, that sux! something you may want to consider doing before anything else: take that new engine apart, and take the block to an automotive machine shop to professionally examine for damage, cracks, etc before doing anything else to it. i don't imagine that particular step would cost too much, and would be wise to do before you start building that new engine up.
