Exclamation Truck in water, now wont start???

I frequently launch my standup jetskis by backing into the water part way and pulling them off my truck. Last night I went a little further than usual, the water came almost to my door, muffler underwater. I pulled out the truck fine but later it wouldn't start.

So far, I've checked all fuses, pulled a few of the spark plugs, checked the fuel shutoff switch and made sure there was no water in the intake. It will run if I spray some starter fluid in the intake and I can hear the fuel pump charging when turning on the ignition. The water never came as high as the engine so i am confused. Cranks fine, electronics work and the tailpipe is dry as far as I can tell.

Read a couple other threads but they were sunk in to the headlights.

Any ideas? O2 sensor?

Thank you.

Were you in deep enough for the fan to through water up on the motor?

May have gotten water in the fuel tank. Drain tank, drop a couple gallons of new fuel in, and try it again.

I agree. How deep would you say it got? Did the cat get wet? What about the transmission or transfer case (if its a 4x4)? If so you may want to flush them.

Never put starter fluid in a truck motor good way to burn your valves, also check to see if your getting spark.

Check your inertia reset breaker - Keep in mind - You r have a 4 second crank window. The PCM shuts down the injectors after that. That program is to protect the cats.

I agree with jward for once - But to add to that , you better check your rear diff. Even tho the breather check valve works pretty well - I've still gotten water in the rear diff. I caught my rear tires on fire before and flew down to the boat launch and did kinduh the same thing your did - I didn't back that far in tho - Somehow , I managed to get water in the diff, I could locate any problems that would allow this to happen , it just did.

Theres more that just the tank back there that can get screwed up by water. You get cell codes most likely when you get her running again.

No, not that deep. It's an extended cab and it came up about a couple inches away from going into the cab by the 3rd door.

I think I will look into this, as long as it isn't that difficult. You think I may be able to pump the gas out??

It came a couple inches from the extended cab door opening, I would say the cat did get wet since the water was a bit rough. The tranny got wet, it's a 2wd.

So, far the truck is sitting in the garage with the spark plugs out. I will see into draining the tank and isn't the inertia reset breaker the Emergency Shutoff switch? I've already checked it.

I appreciate all the ideas guys, anymore? Can't hurt to pick everyones brain. Thank you.

CRANK/NO START:

Check -Theres 4 fuses they have listed to check on my model - The 2003 is has a completely different locations of the fuses in the blocks , so I can't tell you block/# , I would go thru them all, specially in the PDB in the engine compartment.

First tho - Turn the key to run and make sure the pump is activating for prime. Listen closely for the pump , if you don't her it prime - find out why.

Go directly to the the relay after K/ON -K/OFF a few times. Is relay warm or hot to touch ? - It bad. Try swapping with like relay to confirm fault.

Next - Check your Crank Positioning Sensor. - It may have gotten wet. - The location is bottom/front of engine. It may have shorted - clean that connector well and reboot your PCM to erase the KAM. Your engine WILL NOT start if that sensor fails.

But Yea, I'll bet there's water in the tank . You siphon fuel thru the rear tank vent.

Thanks jward. Sure enough I had water in the fuel. I drained the tank, which took forever, added 4 gallons gas, a little fuel in the intake to get her started and about 4 minutes later she stopped sputtering and started running smooth.

In case anyone is wondering how I drained the tank, I used a siphon hose. And since you can't siphon from the gas filler tube, I found an opening on top of the tank towards the rear, it's some sort of hose that runs to a condenser box or something, pardon my ignorance, simply turn the fitting towards the rear a quarter turn and then pop it off. After turning it, it's being held on by a rubber o-ring. To get it back on I had to apply a small amount of oil on the ring to lubricate it and pop it back in.

Glad it didn't hydrolock or anything, dodged that bullet!

Here's a pic of the fuel/water.

Better check that rear end oil, might dodge yuh another bullet, or you may hear a BIG BANG! In roughly 1200 - 2000 miles, max. - Been there done that-$$$$$

"I agree with jward for once"

Only once?

I'll try harder, then.

Glad you got it running, Mr. Big. Good job.
