Getting to the #7 plug

Could anyone offer any advise on gettin the #7 coil pack off.
I'm getting a bad misfire from time to time. the coil itself is loose on the plug but the retaining bolt seems tight. I'm hoping the plastic has just become brittle and snapped.
What need to be removed? Fuel rail? EGR?
I tried for an hour with 2 swivels on a 1/4" socket to no avail.
In my defense it was dark and raining when I tried last night But any advise will be much appreciated.

I did the same COP and plug about 2 weeks ago on mine. I too, gave up after the first attempt and had to come back a 2nd time with more beer and better tools to finish the job. I used a 7mm socket connected to a 3" extension connected to a swivel connected to a 6" extension connected to a 1/4" ratchet. The key is how you approach it from the top. You do not have to remove the fuel rail to get the COP or plug out.

granted i dont have a cop on mine, but it looks like a straight shot with 1/4" drive. maybe its the lack of a hood that makes it look easy for me.

I thought it was #6 that was a PITA - Maybe it's 7. Well I can just loosen the frame rail and get to that one easier. You don't have to remove it. I usually will because it's so easy to pull the two 8mm bolts and just flip the rail up on top of the manifold. There's plenty of slack in the lines to do so.

Just try loosening it tho, if your just working on 7.

BTW - You don't have "coil packs" - There's a big difference, you have coils or a COP system.

Thanks for the advise guys.
I'm glad to hear that I dont have to remove the rail. It looked as though The COP would not clear. My next question would have been whether or not I could just loosen the rail for a little more clearance - Thanks Jbrew
Thanks again guys, I'll post results.

You might wanna tape the socket and universal. I've lost plenty of seven mm's not doing that.

Well guys I could use some additional advise. I've loosened the fuel rail but the rail has a canister and mount with a single vac line that is on the rail directly above #7. Even with the additional wiggle room there is no way a 7mm socket and swivel will fit. I got the bolt loosened about 1/8" before my swivel topped out at said canister mount. If i had an actual swiveling 7mm maybe but not with the combo. To top it off the last Ford Tech that changed the plugs 60,000 ago has appearantly cross threaded and stripped the bolt head. If the rail and canister were not in the way I could still get a bite on the bolt. I'm ignorant as to how to remove the rail from the injectors. With the 2 8mm bolts out it barely moves. How do I disconnect injecctors and get the rail out of the way?
Again any help will be much appreciated.

Lay down a bunch of rags around the injectors and pull up on the rail - Make sure NO gas runs into the plug chambers- use plenty of rags and tuck them in good in the nooks and crannies. O-rings is all that holds them in on both ends. Don't you even have a Haynes manual?

Only thing bad that can happen if you do this - The injector "hats" CAN come off the injectors if they pull out of the manifold instead of the rail - Then you have to go fishing thru the injector hole for them - That can suck and that's why I upgraded my injectors, but , you might be alright.

I had luck with getting at the Cop retaining bolt using a wrench reaching over and trying to get at it from the firewall side.

Good luck
