Question Intake problem, please help

I installed a AEM Brute Force intake this weekend. Install went great, the looks are good, picked up a bit of power. The problem is, at a certain RPM range ~ (1700 to 2200) and a certain engine load ~ (empty truck 30 - 50% acceleration) there is a godawful noise coming from the intake/engine bay. I know that intakes can induce more noise, but this is way too much. I had an AEM certified seller ride in the truck and he called the tech support line, nobody can think what it could be. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks
Casey

a whistling ? a vibration ? Can you feel anything ? or just hear the noise ? hood vibrate ?

Make the noise if you punch it from a stop ? Or only once your moving ?

(its REALLY hard to diagnose a "noise" problem without hearing the noise/being there)

Yup - aftermarket intakes with open filters make noise.

The noise is a howl/vibration that can be felt in the truck. My cell phone will rattle around if it is sitting on my dash. It's like nails on a chalk board. That's what it feels like.

The noise only happens at around 30 to 50% throttle load. I'm not sure how I can best explain it, but it seems to not make the noise most of the time and only happens during an event like slow acceleration on the freeway/driving up a long steep hill.

Like I said, I do know that intakes can add more noise, but I have installed many intakes and even the AEM rep/buddy thinks that it shouldn't be doing that.

Thanks,

Casey

Verify that it isn't rubbing on the inside of the hood. I made brackets to hold the filter on my ATI intake, and one was rubbing on the hood, caused a similar issue.

I have the roush cai & I too get the drone noise. I have read that many others on here state that the only cai that does not drone is the AF1 due to it being stainless steel. I noticed what seemed like the vibration you talked about really bad while traveling on the road cruising at 65 mph and then nailing the throttle while the a/c is on in the summer.

The 06 has a sweet stock intake - You'll prolly be better off putting that back on.

Always reboot the PCM when you change anything in the air metering dept. Theres other info I could post , but you didn't list your engine so screw that.. Info differs between engines.

Good Luck

If I didn't post my engine size, then how do you know that my 06 has a "sweet stock intake"?

For further clarification, my truck is a
2006 Ford F150
King Ranch
Super Crew
5.5" bed
5.4L 3V motor
3.73 gears
Custom magnaflow catback 3" Y pipe with SIDO 2.5" out both sides
Troyer Performance SCT XCal2
20 Wheels
33 Tires

Since putting the intake on I've gained about and average of 1.5 mpg from 3 tanks of gas. I'd like to keep it on.

Thank you,
Casey

Damn I'd hate to be paying for your gas. You posted on 4-28-08 that you installed the cai over the weekend & now two days later you have went thru 3 tanks of gas already.

Who the **** cares ??? You don't pay for his gas, nor did he ask for you to comment on it. no need for post padding in here, he is asking for help.

Casey: The only thing I can think of would be that rubbing, did you check it ? Any such luck ?

The 06 V8's have nice intake set ups . Figured you had one since this isn't the V6 forum - Dohh!

Reposition your filter and clamp it back down or - if the stock filter fits , try that to determine the problem isn't the filter itself. Check you clamps.

No worries about the 3 tanks of gas. I drove my truck to a jobsite 7 hours away. It's paid for through work.

As for the rubbing, I think there is an issue there. Looks like after a week of driving I can see a piece of the intake rubbing on the heat sheild. I'll try to do some adjusting tomorrow. I'm stuck in a hotel now, and don't have my tools with me.

- Your better off leaving well enough alone , since you can't even install an intake right . Just put your old one back on and stop f^cking with it since you have to be mobile so much.
