Trouble starting when hot?

I have a 2006 F150 4X4 with the small V8 and about 20k miles. When it gets hot outside, after driving and engine is hot, when I shut it off and run inside for a minute it does not want to start up. Sometimes I have to hit the key 2 or 3 times and it starts normally. It only happens in the summer. It doesn't happen all of the time. If it cools off for 10 or 15 minutes I don't have any trouble. It has done it since it was new. Has anybody had this problem before and if so what causes it. Thanks for any help.

Towards the end of last summer this was happening with my 2005. Eventually my starter went bad.

You might need wiring pigtail kit as directed by TSB 06-19-14. They replace the wire terminal at the starter terminal. This was a very difficult to find problem before the TSB.

Try switching key sets with the wife , maybe theres interference coming from your key ring.

PATS maybe?

What about the starter relay? I have had problems like this from relays before. It'll drive ya nuts trying to figure these issues out.

Yea - or , I also heard of having to turn the key real slow after being inserted.

Sometimes people have gone in for a reflash as well.

This problem can be a PITA to pin down.

I recall one guy doing all of the above - So he went in for a re -program and that didn't work.

That was about the same time the TSB came out and that ended up being the problem.

If your search the 2004 + models forum on this site you should be able to find that one.

The air filter is new. The starter turns the engine over just fine. It acts like there is no fuel or spark and only when hot. I will keep the spare key in my pocket and try it next time it happens. Thanks alot for the replies.

You can check that - The easiest and quickest way to test that is to feel - If hot /it's bad.

I'm not sure on your model - you may be able to switch that relay with your horn relay - They are the same on the older models.
