4.6 rebuild

I have a 97 f150, 4.6, 250,000 miles. It still runs ok but I can't help but think it could die any day, due to age. I am thinking about pulling it out and having it rebuilt, then reinstalling myself. My question is this: What should I know before doing this if I am going to do it myself? What I mean is, are there other things I am going to have to buy to make it work again or is it simply taking it out and then putting it back in and plugging everything back up? I hate to plan on spending $2500 for the rebuild then have another $2500 in extra stuff I didnt realize to begin with.

I saw many other threads on swapping motors and every one seemed to have folks throwing in other stuff they should do while they are it (blowers, etc). I am not looking for more power or anything, just the same thing I have now, only newer. Thanks

I would sell the truck while it is still running and buy a '01 or '02 with the PI heads because with that many miles you will spend the extra $2500.
On your next truck relax and enjoy it cause you have been worried about this one for 8 years https://www.f150online.com/forums/v8-engines/6162-engine-fit-bay.html

PI heads arent necessary but fresh heads would be a good idea. you should plan on having the bottom end having some work done. i doubt it will need align honed, but the cyls may, you may need the deck done, the crank may need turned.
