Water Pump

I have a 1999 Expedition with the 5.4l engine in it. I actually swapped the motor back in December and things have been running great! The only negative is that every time I parked I got a small puddle of anti-freeze on the ground, nothing too big, but definitely noticeable.

Last week I parked, and went out the next morning to find a large puddle, and anti-freeze still dripping out. At first glance, it appeared to coming from behind the harmonic balancer. Now it looks to be coming from the weep hole under the water pump. The water pump is new, but as I was searching on line I wondered, "is the water pump upside down, or is the weep hole supposed to be on the bottom?"

Any thoughts would be great, maybe my water pump is just shot, I am not sure...

The weep hole should go on the bottom. Where did you get the water pump?

I believe it was a Kragen Auto Parts (Parts America). I would have to check.

That is interesting. My leak is by no means spraying out, just dribbling out.

If anything comes from that weep hole - The pump is no good and needs to be replaced.

As far as I know the weep hole always goes to the bottom. It does not make sense that it should go on the top. I would suggest you got a bad pump.

Well whatever, weep hole is on the top - The service manual shows it on top for the 98 model anyway - heres a pic of a Ford factory water pump -

The Top "weep hole"-

Here's a bottom pic, but the manual points to top when referring to the weep hole. It doesn't say anything about the bottom. -

I just looked on the trucks in the shop - The 98 I can see - It's on top. The 01 I can't see - to much sh^t in the way.

However , I don't think it's possible to install wrong, regardless of where yours might be , replace if leaking; it will totally fail soon.-

Waterpump bolts to engine with weep on top. Following the bolt pattern on the block and referencing the part in the pictures puts it there. -

Drain coolant the upper rad hose is coming off. Remove the air deflecter over top of the rad. Remove the upper rad hose from the rad. Remove the degas bottle hose from the rad. Remove the fan blade assy and clutch. Prop a long screwdriver between two of the water pump bolts and the fan assy and clutch shaft and use a large crescent wrench to loosen the fan nut. The fan assy and clutch nut is standard in that it is righty tighty, lefty loosey. I use a crescent wrench because I no clue as to what size the nut is. Remove the two bolts holding the shroud to the rad and pull up. Be careful not to not the rad fins with the fan assy.

PS. Now would be a good time for electric fans.

I did not understand what you meant when you explained how to brace the fan in order to pull it off. Can you re-explain it, maybe with some pictures?

In the following picture there is no fan but it clearly shows how to place a long screwdriver between the water pump bolts to keep it from turning so you can loosen the fan nut with a wrench.

That makes sense. By water pump bolts I thought you meant the mounting bolts and thus I could not figure it out. Thanks!

You are welcome and also right. I should have written water pump pulley bolts. BTW, that is also how to remove the pulley bolts is they are really tight. Just leave all the bolts in and crack them free then you can hold the pulley and remove them.
