help with misfire

i have been having a lot of cylinder misfire codes. mainly cylinders 1 and 5. i have pulled the plugs and the plugs look fine.

however they are autolite plugs. they are not motorcraft wires either just a silicone 8mm plug wire. they were brand new when i bought the truck 30k miles ago. are the autolite plugs the reason, after some research it seems like they are the reason but the plugs do not look fouled or bad at all. they are not really dark or white or worn, they look normal.

are the autolite plugs the reason for the misfires? or is it the wires too

I played that exact same riddle in my head for a few months with my 98.

Autolites didn't look bad. Everything seemed normal to the naked eye.

Needless to say, after a set of motorcraft plugs and a good set of wires, baddabing baddaboom. No, more miss.

Could be either plugs or wires. It could also be a bad coil pack. Autolite plugs have a history of giving troubles but it is a bit of a crap shoot.

Good Luck

I had NGK plugs in for about 1000 miles before they started to miss, switched back to motorcraft, the ones for about 2.30 each, have not had a miss since (only 800 miles on them though). I am using MSD superconductor plug wires (8.5mm) and MSD coil packs.

It's hard to see in this pic, but if you look closely you can see the discoloration on the plugs shell - caused from getting to hot - Autolites are the wrong heat range for our motors. I ran these for about 40 miles before my truck was plagued with multiple misfires.

Marketing reps push these plugs on third party vender's and cross reference the Motorcraft with these. I finally received a refund after 3 years of writing here and there. The check for $62.18 came from Honeywell about 2 months ago. The plugs were $50 and change when I bought them , but Honeywell gave me interest on top of everything else for my trouble . They also apologized finally and said AGAIN -We produce Motorcraft plugs speced by your vehicles manufacturer for your model and to purchase these in the future.
