engine swap

i am swapin a 4.9L with a 5.0L. now my question is what ecu do i need? i have a 89 f150 4-speed 4x4. i know i need a 5.0 ecu but i have had some people say that any 5.0 ecu will work and i have had others say that i need a 5.0 4x4 4-speed ecu. i think just a 5.0 ecu any manual style will work but i need to make sure so i have it in hand instead of finding out the hard way..

It really doesn't matter as there were no electronic automatics in 89, unless the E4OD was around back then...

Getting a ECU from an 89 model would be nice, though.

All that work for 0.1L's...yeesh.

89 was the first year of the E4OD in the F-150. That's a moot point because the OP has a manual tranny.

It's not the 0.1 liter that's the issue - the 4.9 is a slow revving torquey inline 6 that has zilch horsepower, designed to WORK, not go fast. The 5.0 is a small block short stroke V8. It's going to accelerate a lot quicker but it doesn't have the low end grunt of the I6. It's probably going to get better gas mileage and feel a lot peppier until you start trying to do actual work with the truck.

I believe that 4 speed stick has a granny low - that will compensate a LOT for less bottom end torque.

hmm!

well i knew this was a hard one but i dont know. for putting a 5.0 over a 4.9 thier is a big difference, and its not alot of work to swap out motors in this year of trucks i just not to sure on the ecu question that i am having a hard time gettin a answer for. i have been told more than not that a manual ecu will work but just curious if it has to 4x4 too.
and for any parts let me know witch ones u are looking for?

It all depends what you use the truck for! If you use it as a TRUCK, the 4.9 is better suited to the job.

I dont know for sure I've never done it but The electronics I believe should be the same for either trannyr. I assume your wanting to go with an EFI 5.0. The ones I've worked on manual and automatic seemed the same to me there may be a programing difference though. I would think if you got the one out of any manual you would be good. If you went carbed there isnt a computer to worry about..
