I believe the 5.4l is 7, the 4.6l is 6.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong. Note: It does tell you in the owners manual you know =)

On page 353 of my Owners Manual, Maintenance Products Specifications And Capacities: 5.4L Engine - 7.0 quarts (6.6L).

It also says to use 5W20 oil.

The manual says 7 qts of Motorcraft 5W20 synthetic blend. The disclaimer at the bottom of the chart says you don't have to use synthetic blend, regular dino oil is just fine for 5000 miles. Puts the oil level about halfway between add and full.

Mark- see my posts under "oil capacity question". I also had a '99 w/5.4 and I thought I remembered using 6 qts. when I changed but Chilton says 7 qts. for all the modular 5.4's. Either Chilton is wrong or or or- oh this is all so confusing:o. I don't have the glove box manual (went with the truck) so I can't check that. It looks like the 5.4's have always taken 7 qts. unless Chilton is wrong.

Page 214 of the 1999 F-150/250 owner's guide states that all engines take 6 quarts (5.7 liters) of Motorcraft 5w-30 Super Premium motor oil.
Id bet that the 3-valve motors hold 7 quarts.
It kinda sucks that they changed that, because it was really convenient to just buy a case of oil and 2 oil filters and you were good to go for 2 oilchanges.
No biggie, I guess. Ive never seen Motorcraft oil for sale by the case anyways...

Then buy SEVEN cases, so that you can do twelve oil changes..and it will work out. Numerically speaking

Thanks F-P, I thought that my 99-5.4 took 6 qts. but the dadgum Chilton says 7 qts. on all the 5.4 modular motors. I know my '02-4.6 took 6 qts. That is the reason I no longer use aftermarket shop manuals- too many mistakes!

I buy Motorcraft 5-20 semi-synthetic at Wally-World for $10.36 for 5 qt. jug. That doesn't come out as neat as the case for 2- 6 qt. changes but the price is really good. The same oil at W-W in the qt. is at least $2.50 a qt. I have always bought oil by the case but now at least at W-W the price is so much better on the jug I have started to go that way. When I was in Pep Boys recently I noticed they had Castrol in the 5.5 qt. jug. Must be for those guys that want to make sure it's at max on the stick.
