Do I have the PI heads.
Do I have the PI heads.
I have been driving 4.6 ford for a few years. I have had mustags with the pi heads and f150's with the pi heads. But my current truck is a 99 f150 4.6 and I think I have the non pi heads. Does anybody know when they started the pi heads on the f150?
Thanks for any info.

HI!... The F-150 4.6 engine didn't get P.I heads until 2001. The 5.4 in the F-150 got them in 1999. The 5.4 in the F-250 got them in 2000. The MUSTANG 4.6 got P.I heads in 1999.
HI!... All P.I heads use the same camshafts. The P.I heads from a MUSTANG will be either WINDSOR/ROMEO. Most truck P.I heads are WINDSOR but some are ROMEO. You might have to do a valve cover swap if your putting ROMEO P.I heads on a now WINDSOR headed engine. You will also need to find a 4.6 truck intake manifold since your now NON P.I intake manifold will not bolt to P.I heads. Different intake port shapes. The only reason the P.I headed MUSTANGS made 40H.P more than the NON P.I headed trucks 4.6's was PCM tuning and different intake manifold design. If you put the MUSTANG intake manifold on your truck you will lose a ton of low in TQ in your powerband. The MUSTANG is much lighter than your truck so Ford didn't care that the MUSTANG lost low end TQ.
Here's a pic of the difference between NON P.I heads (LEFT) and P.I heads (RIGHT) :

HI!... That could very well be, but I've never seen a MUSTANG 4.6 with anything other than ROMEO heads around here.

I guess that explains that a bit better. Hope this info helps the poster out.

Mustangs have come with both Romeo and Windsor engines. The 1996 thru 1998 Mustangs came with Romeo based engines. The 1999 thru 2000 Mustangs came with Windsor engines. Then just for fun, Ford went back to Romeo engines in the 2001 thru 2003 Mustangs. Be sure to check the engine no matter what year it is. It seems that Ford carried over some engines into the following model year.

. On another note I think I will just save a little more for a 5.4 N/A or a lightning motor & trans.
