4.6L Ignition

Hey guys i have about 85k on my 2000 F-150. I have the 4.6L in it and I was planning on changing the spark plugs soon. I know that motorcraft plugs are the best but should I get the regular platinum plugs or the fine wire platinum plugs? I know the fine wire plugs are supposed to be better but do they last as long? Also, is there anything else I SHOULD change with the ignition such as the wires or coil packs?? My truck runs fine I just want to put new plugs in because they've never been changed and do any other necessary ignition maintenance.

A set of high perf. coils wouldn't hurt anything. I would go with the Fine wires, they should last just as long.

Well am I looking at these parts right? Because the coils cost around $90 dollars a peice. Is that what you're talking about or are you talking about the spring inside the rubber boot? I'm in college and I don't really have the money to replace all 8 of them. haha Thanks

Get the coils on E-bay from Global for $90 a set. Many on this board have used them with few complaints.

Question is - do you have coil packs and wires, or COP's?

Doesn't the 2000 4.6L have COP's?

The fine wire plugs last in my four six about 60k miles. I for one think this is ok, because, I haven't (and will never) jumped on the bandwagon with people saying a plug should last 100K miles.

If you are not planning on doing anything extravagant with your truck, just get the COP's from ebay. They cost less and have a guarantee. Now, it is your choice to replace the COP's. Obviously they are working just fine now. I myself would change them (and get the ones from ebay) because, I already have them out, and, don't really like doing any job twice. But hey, that's just me.

Good Luck!

It Was On The 1999 Models When They Changed!!! All 4.6l's Since 1999 Are Cop's.

All 5.4L's have COP ignitions. The 4.6L's used coil packs on all trucks w/4.6L's until 2000 (mid year). This was the transition year to COP ignitions along with the elimination of the ECT sensor for the (truck) 4.6L engines. Then the PI transition 2001 with that motor. 5.4L's PI transition was earlier, in 99. It's easy to confused

As far as "COP's" - Acell has the worst record with there individual coils so far. Many DOA posts in the past along with premature low grade misfire failures soon after install.

I'm not sure how Acell "coil packs" rate. Most users here have had good luck with the MSD coil packs.

Global COP's have the best record as far as individual coils on this site.

The 2000 4.6L Accel Coil Pack shown here -

So if my truck is a 2000 there is a chance I could have coil packs or cop's? I think they are the coil packs.

If you have wires coming from the front of the engine right next to the upper raditor hose and under the Air intake you have 2 Coil packs... if you dont have wires you will have the COP's
