tune up?

I am a younger old school mechanic, but my 04 fx4 does not care. On those great old engines (I think of my 64 tbird with a 390) changing the distributor cap, rotor, wires and plugs made all the difference in the world and was a tune up. The 5.4 I use daily now (I don't know how many valves??) seems to begin suffering from poor ignition. My mpg is down, the idle is rough occasionally, and it still has power, but I could always use more. I also see posted here a lot advice and issues with changing the plugs and plug maitenence is not noted in the owners manual. I have 57k miles and want to take care of my truck. Any advice of giving it some love?

Maybe you haven't heard of the problems we at Ford have been having , replace the plugs at 100,000 and take the risk of them breaking off and resulting in a $2000+ bill , change them at LEAST every 50,000, don't follow the manual!!!

Thank you for all the advice.

I will do the plugs as soon as possible. About the fuel filter, uh, to my knowledge, it is the first one that the factor put in. I am feeling a little numb. Any nice brands or suggestion in replacing or upgrading that unit?

According to my Severe Duty Maintenance Schedule:

every 60,000 miles
  • Spark Plugs
every 30,000 miles
  • Automatic Transmission Fluid
  • Air Filter
every 15,000 miles
  • Fuel Filter
PS.....don't forget to change your oil & rotate your tires

Alright, I will start getting it up to date, the neglect is over.

Would anybody recommend pulling the fuel pump fuse over tripping the inertia sensor?

What is COP's? Any reccomendation on plugs, I would take fuel economy over performance?
