06 Engine Surge -18k miles

Hi guys,
OK, here is the deal. I am in Germany and have a 06 KR with the 5.4 flex fuel engine. Last week, the engine started acting a little quirky. If you press your foot into it, like halfway or full throttle, the engine will surge like no tomorrow until you let off the gas. It starts fine and idles fine and drives a normal in-town speeds without any problems. It acts up when you attempt to reach highway (autobahn ) speeds and if you try to pass.

I use what is known here as "Super Unleaded", but it is only 89 octane. I do run a bottle of injector cleaner from time to time but never a problem. Now, I did use a bottle of 104 Octane Boost on my last fill up and that is when the trouble started. I dumped it in when the truck was nearly empty, then added a full tank. I got the stumbling/surge probably a day later. I ran the truck gently to a half tank then filled back up, thinking if it was the octane boost, maybe I could "dilute" the mixture. Still having the same trouble, and have used probably a quarter tank of the new fill up.

Tonight on my way home, I got a blinking CEL, but it didn't stay on. It blinked a dozen or so times, then went out and stay out. According to the manual, it shows a blinking CEL as emission related and to refrain from hard accelerations/de-accelerations until the truck has been serviced. I had a PP III tuning installed and have removed it and went back to the factory settings. The PP III did not list any codes from the blinking CEL. I do have access to Ford dealers here for warranty work, but just wanted to get some advice before I take her in. Just something about German techs working on my truck......

Anyone have this trouble? I know from searching the 05's had some injector problems, but didn't find anything mentioning the 06 model. Do you think I screwed the O2 sensors out? Any advice or input would be most graciously appreciated.

Prost!

Hi ibcob,
where do you fill your truck? Super unleaded should be at least 93 octane over here. There´s plenty of additives in brand name fuel. So since the 5.4 is designed for regular, and you also used the Octane Boost, i think that might have been some kind of overkill. I´m filling my 2005 with 93 octane since day one and it runs like a dream but ford keeps saying that the engine might develope problems with higher octane. The few Ford dealer in Germany that are able to do warranty work for US vehicles have direct access to US-Ford-Koeln and have all the specs, info and machines to maintain and troubleshoot your KR. including the TSB´s and recalls. They even have the "mighty" Rotunda removal tool, that we hopefully never need. So don´t fear the "German techs" and save the money for the system cleaner and octane booster

Thanks for the reply. The gas is purchased at AAFES, where all they have is
"normal" unleaded which is 86 octane and "super" which is 89 octane. Now if I do get gas with fuel coupons at the Esso, they offer "super plus", which is 91 octane. The gas here is formulated differently than in the US, obviously.

You mentioned in your post about Ford saying the engine might develop problems with high octane - can you elaborate? Any advice here - run the tank through and see what happens?

Just checked with the 2005 Owner´s Guide. It´s on Page 271 or in the Index under "detergent in Fuel".
So do you mean that the Super Plus, which is at least 98 Octane here, converts to 91 Octane US? That would make "normal unleaded" an 87 Oc. US?
I always thougt Octane is Octane and that you guy´s have lower numbers because of the more common low compression engines.

Not sure where you are buying gas, but I have never seen 98 octane in Germany. There are two numbers on the pump (German fuel stations).....are you certain you are reading octane?

Yes, unleaded in the States is 87. The next grade (whatever they call it) is
89. The Super in the States is either 91 or 93 octane, depending on where you buy it. There are some stations in the States that sell racing fuel, which I beleive is over 100 octane, but it's damn expensive.

Germany has lower octane requirements for their cars - hence the reason you must buy at lease the "super unleaded" to get the "unleaded" octane the book states you need.

OK, can anyone else chime in here on the symptoms I described?

"Normal unleaded" = 91 Research Oktan Zahl (Says 91ROZ on the Pump)

"Super unleaded" = 95 ROZ

"Super Plus" = 98 ROZ except Shell (V-Power = 100+ ROZ)

--------------------------------------------------------------

USA = Motor Oktan Zahl (MOZ)

87 in USA = 91 in Germany and so on. Different numbers on da pump, same

stuff in da pump Just found that in one of my Service books...

If you have an early 2006 i would probably also check the injectors. Supposed to be an 05 problem, but who knows how many faulty ones Ford had left on stock back then. (and surely didn´t throw them away)
