Got a problem, pulled CEL codes

Hello everyone. Recently have a problem with engine bogging down during long runs on highway. Motor acts like it's starving for fuel. Does it at about 2 minutes intervals. I can accelerate out of it most of the time. Fuel economy is way down.

I pulled the codes and got:

565 (canister purge solenoid circut fault)
172 (O2 sensor fault / lean)
173 (O2 sensor fault / rich)

So I replaced the O2 sensor with a Bosch unit. Still having the same problem. Does anyone know if 565 will cause this problem or if any other components might throw the same code even though they might not be connected to the computer such as the PCV valve for example?

What year? what engine? You need to fill out the info in you profile so it automatically appears on every post.

Will do, it's a 1995, 5.0 litre 2wd XLT.

Check the CANP solenoid's electrical connector to ensure it's fastened. if so, check the resistance of the coil to see if it's open. In any event, the PCM is detecting that the circuit is open.

Once that fault is resolved, disconnect the battery for 15 minutes to reset the computer then retest.

I'll check it out tomorrow. How many ohms of resistance am I looking for on the coil or do I just need to check for continuity?

Thanks Steve.

Is this canister purge solenoid valve... where I need to check for an open (red circle)?

I measured the resistance at around 56 ohms. I just sprayed both male and female ends with contact cleaner. Disconnecting the battery now for 15 mins and going to check for codes again.

I think it may have just been a dirty air filter! Just got back from a test run and it's running a lot smoother with better throttle response. The CEL did come on one time during my run but the engine didnt' display any symptoms like before.

Is it possible a dirty air filter will throw a code for the purge canister selenoid circuit?

Also sounds like it could be an ERG valve issue. Having the same symptoms w/ my '96 5.0 L now. Looking @ a number of contributing factors throwing codes - O2 sensors, at least one plug wire cracked or arcing, and ERG valve. A faulty fuel pump relay can mimic this to some extent too. You can swap your horn relay w/ the fuel pump relay that's next to it. My guess is if this issues never occurs until after the engine is warmed up and down the road, the ERG valve could be dirty. Just a guess, based of the sporadic nature and the fact that a warm engine is a common denominator.

NEED HELP AGAIN GUYS!!!

Engine is bogging down again and throwing a CEL. Since March it has run great. I thought I had fixed the problem but apparently not!

Something new also...it's backfiring or something. When it boggs down a series of popping or backfiring is evident right under the floor board...maybe from the CAT??

I tried cleaning the MAF sensor again as best I could and changed the air filter even though it had only 2k miles on it...didn't help!

What else should I try??? I need to drive this truck 3 hours on Thursday morning.

when did you last fill up with gas? maybe bad gas? or water in gas?
check fuel pressure and change the fuel filter.

I never thought of that. When the gas prices were high I would never fill up either tank completely and since prices have dropped I still have yet to top them off. I can't even remember the last time I filled up the rear tank.

What would be a good fix for water/condensation? Add some rubbing alcohol?

Get your codes pulled before you assume anything.

If you have water in the gas, throw a couple bottles of Iso-Heet in the tank. It has other additives in it too. Rubbing alcohol is actually 30% water.

Thanks for the reply,

I forgot to mention I already used Iso-heat in both tanks last week...no improvement...and yesterday I tried to pull the codes again with the same code reader I used before but it wasn't flashing any codes for some odd reason I dunno...I reset the code reader and re-checked...but still no codes.

Could it be an ECU problem?
