Oil Question

I don't drive my truck much is sits most of the time. When should I change my oil every 3000 miles or every 3 months. I am not sure if it matters. Any input would be great.

Go with a high grade synthetic and filter. Then don't worry about it. Mobil 1 has a product which they claim is good for 15,000 miles. I put that in my SUV, and I only change the oil once a year. Why not? It just sits there. In my truck, which sees daily use, I run Royal Purple oil + K&N filter. Just remember to stay within the recommended weight according to your owners manual - most likely, 5W20. Red Line, Amsoil, Lucas Oil, Royal Purple, Mobil 1, and the list goes on. Plenty to choose from. Even MotorCraft offers semi-synthetic and full synthetic oil which you will be able to pour into your engine and run for at least 5,000 miles.

Thanks for the answer. Maybe my question wasn't clear enough. Say if I drive my truck only 3000 miles a year should I only change it once or multiple times. Will the oil break down just by the vehicle sitting there. Thanks

The OCI will depend mostly on your driving habits with that vehicle. I have an 89 LSC that is one of seven produced with the engine package from Ford, a 325HP 5.0 and the oil that is in it has been there for the last 4 years. The last oil analysis showed it to be in fine shape. But when I start the engine, I run it at least 30 minutes at temp. The car has an original 34,000 miles on it. If you are driving short trips, change every three months. If you drive it like I do the Lincoln, change at 3000 miles. I would avoid any synthetic oil. Most require a tackifier to keep the oil film on the parts and usually corrosion is higher than dino even for a daily driver. If you trend reports, you would see that the synthetics have an increase in wear metals, iron in particular, during winter months. This is not "wear metal" as you would normally think but corrosion of the iron showing up in spectroscopy as iron. Stay with a name brand dino of your choice and it will be fine.

Oil will get dirty whether you drive it or if you let it sit. I only drove 5k in a year on my other car, and the oil was sludgy. I would change it every 6 mos or 3k.
