4.6 longtubes

ok ive searched and cant find a straight answer. i Know that the 5.4 and 4.6 will bolt up the same headers i.e. same heads. but my question is has anyone put longtube on a 4.6? its my understanding they only make them for the 5.4 trucks. but what if i put on a set of mustang or 5.4 longtubes.

Biggest reason i ask is i wonder how they will clear the frame and such?

From the Archives:

I spoke to Flats man long ago, and he eventually used 5.4 LT's on his 98 4.6. Both sides had to be modified.

yes i did i have a 1997 f-150 4.6L 2WD i put pacesetter longtubes for a 97 5.4L 4X4 on my truck and they fit fine.. expect the EGR nipple is a differnt size 5.4= bigger you will need an adapter or an EGR delete plate.

a 3/8's exention works pretty good if you shove it up the EGR pipe and duck tape it so it wont fall out thats how mine is hehe

I have some OBX's for a 5.4 on the way, going into my 4.6 4x4. They had better work. Only issue I'm aware of is the EGR sizing.

make sure u take the heat sheild off of the passenger side!!! it wont clear there. you can leave the starter in you dont have to jack up the engine everything bolts up pretty nicely.

I hope you're right, but apparently no one has tried the Dynatech / OBX headers on the 4.6 yet...??? Where is it that the heatshield gets in the way? I would think that due to the lower deck height, everything would hang down lower, giving even more clearance. I guess if they don't fit I can order the Pacesetters and hope for the best.

mine hang a little bit higher than my stock pipe did. in order to get the passenger side header up there you have to take out the heat sheild or u will sctratch the crap out of the headers!! its like 3 or 4 bolts and it pulls right out.

i know shifty you put longtubes on but that was a two wheel drive and our 4wd dont have the same clearance since we have the torsion suspension with upper and lower controll arms not coils.

well i did order the 5.4 4X4 headers so i dont see why they wouldnt work for a 4.6L with 4X4...after all "OFF ROAD USE ONLY!" kind hard to do that with 2WD
