Misfire help on escort

I know this isn't the place for cars, but it is a Ford and the owner is my buddy. Well, we replaced his fuel filter because it was the original (96 escort LX with 1.9L 4cyl.) and it helped out alot but didn't fix his misfire problem. He went to Syracuse this weekend and had a CEL come on I scanned and got the following results:

P0301 Cyl 1 misfire
Freeze data:
RPM 2324
Speed 37MPH
Load 88.6%
Coolant temp 179F
Long term fuel trim 1 -2.2%
Short term fuel trim 3 0.0%
Long term fuel trim 3 -51.0%

He has replaced the wires, plugs and fuel filter so far and its still misfiring, could this be his coil or something else like injectors?

He also states that on this trip by 120 trip miles he was below 1/2 tank, he usually gets 28MPG with a 12 gallon tank.

Any more input that may be needed can be provided at request.

Thank you for your guy's help!

Dustin

Well judging by load, it looks like he is at WOT, it could be the coil, but the LTFT of -51% is a little odd. If the mileage is down, inj. #1 could be stuck open. Have you inspected the oil, did it smell like or seem to be diluted with gas?

We checked the oil tonite, it was a little low, so he added some oil, but overall it does need to be changed and it smelled like used oil to me, it COULD be contaminated a little but with gas but its not a whole lot. Smells more like exhaust gas impregnated dirty oil to me. Check his injector connections tonite, seem tight, wiggled and whatnot to ensure good connections. He also stated only 1 has given him the most trouble, Cyl 3 used to before he changed the wires.

I would pull the plug out of #1 and check its condition. If the injector is bad it may be fuel fouled.
