Joshmac4.6 is completely correct about the coils being paired and sometimes it will kill two cylinders at a time DEPENDING on where it fails in the coil. It is also entirely possible to have a bad coil on one of these and just a single cylinder failure in the coil......
Even so , you might want to put the OEM plugs in her and start from their. I wouldn't trust those others.
Also , like your mechanic said , it could be the pump. I would rule out a possible fuel problem if you can get a hold of a pressure gauge.

It's prolly the damn coil. I absolutely don't like those Autolite plugs you have in there. BUT, some people can run them. I couldn't run them in my 98 - But I have 5.4L with a different type of ignition. So I can't say for sure how the V6 reacts to the Autolites..
My daughter has the same year truck as you with the 4.2L . Haven't had a misfire problem in that truck - yet. We Installed Motorcraft plugs in that one and that's what we pulled out of there as well..
