2002 5.4 misfire with no DTC....(code)
2002 5.4 misfire with no DTC....this is for Yu'alls info. We puchased for my wife's driver a 2002 Ford F150 Super Crew 5.4V8 (2 valve), 4x4 with 96k almost 2 years ago. Drove it to 108k with no problems. Then P304 showed up, engine misfire and CEL on.
Took it to independent shop...changed COP on #4 and said plug looked weak.
Barely got home with misfire and CEL on again. So I got on this forum in Sept of last year (thanks J brew) and got the correct Motorcraft plugs and 8 coils from Global Automotive in Florida for $96 plus shipping. Took a few hours and did it all myself...being very careful and attention to details. (I work in the Propane business as a service tech, gotta be careful!! lol, still have my eyebrows). Truck ran perfect til 111,000 and January 15th, 2008. Starting getting heavy rain here in Northern California and truck started to misfire again with no CEL showing.
man...I tried for 4 weeks off and on to get it to light (bought the best handheld, trying to read history) finally gave up and took it to the Ford Dealer we bought it used from last thursday. Sean, the Asst Service Mgr, said come back after lunch and give us an hour and $106 bucks. And we will tell you what cylinder coil is misfiring. So, at 2:15pm, (without touching my engine, just diagnosis) they said #6. So, I went home with it missing and luckily it didn't light up the CEL. Replaced the coil with the one I got from the Independent shop and now she runs like a race car...I examined Globals coil and the wire seem tinged light brown, so I am assuming it burnt or shorted. The replacement coil wire was nice and shiny silver. FYI, I pulled the boot off gently and put Dielectric grease up and down the coil wire and slid the boot back on then put it in the spark plug hole after I blew debris out with the air nozzle.
J brew...last sept I used a light, very light coating of anti-seize and torqued (yes I got a torque wrench with various extensions on all 8 plugs without flex joints and torqued at 14-15 ft lbs.) anyway plug number 6 was still cherry.
You warned me to watch out for the plugs coming loose and so far almost 6 months and almost 4k miles, no problem.
So here is why I posted to the forum. #1 Haven't heard back from Global on warranty (1 year) for the coil. Are they still selling and backing them. I checked ebay recently and they are still there. But no coils for sale.
#2 You can have the dealer just diagnose the problem without screwing with you engine and try to do it yourself. If you have the skills and patience.
#3 The cheapest Diagnostic Code reader was $67 at Kragens, but if there is no code go to Ford. But be totally clear, don't pull coils or plugs. Especially plugs. Luckily we have a 2 valve. I'm sorry for the guys with 3 valves and all the problems....All and all we still love our pickup..hope this info helps someone else a little
