whats wrong?!

i got a 1990 f-150 with a 300 inline 6 in it. yesterday i noticed that if i would let it sit at idle for a min or so it would just die by itself. I also noticed yesterday that it was missing out every now and then and sometimes i couldnt even go past 2k rpms and if you did the tach would bounce and when you would let off the gas a big back fire would come after. So do you guys got any ideas what it could be? i was thinkin that it might not hold the idle due to a bad fuel pump not sure though.

yeah im going to lean towards fuel...when it dies doe sit sound like its starving? check/chage fuel filter then test the fuel pump....also check the intake filter make sure theres nothing clogging it up.

If that engine has a mechanical distributor in it, this can be indicative of bad distributor shaft bearings/bushings. Had this happen to me on an old BMW.

I've seen them plug solid.

The 4.9 has low end torque up the wazoo, but horsepower and acceleration is not in its vocabulary. It's a true truck engine meant for pulling.

Great motor

We had an 82 with a 300 I6 and a single barrel carb. It would pull like a mother but it wasn't quick by any means. It did get awesome gas mileage though. I think Dad would get about 22 in ti running 65 and 70 here in texas. Idled smooth as glass. I6 is where it's at.

power stroke needs to make a Inline 6...powerstrokes always get pwned by cummings because there inline 6's...witch are TQ monsters. if the 300 has a ton of TQ shouldnt it get rolling pretty fast because when you WOT that feeling that throws you in your seat is TQ isnt it? i donno ive always loved inline 6's and powerstroke needs to make a 4.9L Inline 6 stroker!!! or better yet a 7.3L inline 8 stroke HAAHAH...*ive seen an inline 8 somewere* but that would be like 800Ft lbs of torque thatd be alsome
