Removal/Installation of Engine + trans

Morning everybody...

I was wondering if anyone who has removed or installed their 5.4 engine and/or trans could tell me if you can remove the engine+trans together as one unit from above (i.e. the traditional manner of engine hoist), or if they must be separated. I have a feeling the procedure may be more complex than I realize. I have a 97 Expe with the 5.4 and E40d that (hopefully) will hit 200k miles in the next year or so and I am trying to plan ahead for any major powertrain problems.

Can anyone with experience give some advise on removing the engine and trans?

Thanks...this site rocks.

Neal and I both separate them. 3 Starter bolts and 7 or so tranny bolts + torque converter. You need to pull the intake manifold off to get the engine out. I believe one member here did it in one piece but I cannot recall who and when.

not a problem to take engine trans together
but you must remove cab first (that's the way I do it)

From: Georgia on my mind...
I pull the trans from underneath then the engine through the top. It's easier, IMO, to line the bellhousing/torque converter studs up from the transmission side than the engine side.

Thanks for the info guys. I don't have access to a real lift, but do have access to engine hoists (hence the desire to remove them together)....the thought of wrestling with a 350lb tranny without proper equipment is bothering me....but I do have a good while (I hope) before I have to tackle this kind of thing.
