camshaft position sensor woes figured out. look at this!

so I bought this non running 2001 F-150 5.4L V-8. And started troubleshooting. found out it didn't have a fuel pump relay. got one for it and the truck would start and run like crap then stall. got a code reader and it said the camshaft position sensor was bad. took it out and it had a small nick in it. got a new one and installed it. truck started, ran like crap, then died. ran a code and got cam position sensor again. took the one i had just put in back out and the frikin' thing was gone. the engine ate the sensor part of it. WTF?

so today i spent all day taking the front of the engine apart and found the missing sensor piece. i haven't taken the valve covers off yet so i cant see if there is something wrong with the cam gear. has anyone else ever had this happen? btw the part that i fished out of the engine has the same nick in it that the old one had. was i s'posed to put a spacer or something on it?

anyway. now that i'm in there what are some to do things I should do?

Pull the cam cover off on the drive side. Look at the cam gear. The bolt could be loose and the gear is about to fall off or the camshaft has moved forward allowing the gear to hit. Whatever the cause may be it should not be coming in contact with the sensor.

I say, investigate what JMC said. And if you can't figure it out, just put a couple of washers in it to space it out, and roll on!!

just kidding!
