what a pain

well today i finally decided to put my new egr on because im really tired of the check engine light. so i go to take the old one off and some how i broke one of the bolts holding it on. so anyways after a lot of ratcheting i got it off. well since i had it off i figured i might as well take off the throttle body too and clean it out. i got the throttle body off no problem. i flipped it over and was shocked. my egr ports were completely clogged. it took me forever to clean them out. heres a pic of what came out of them

after i got it all clean out i went to put the throttle body back on. but after 10 years things tend to be a little fragile.

my pcv cracked in 2 when i was trying to put it back in. at that point i said screw it because it was too late to go pick up another one. so my truck is now sitting in the garage dead until tomorrow. it looks like ill be making a trip to the dealer

Good job !! - Yea, those pcv systems go bad like that. Atleast it broke in your hands instead of on the road.

Your right !! Those are pipe cleaners!! I tell people that's what I use -all over this site..

BUT - That's not what I meant. I think I've been calling the Automotive "Port Cleaners" - " pipe cleaners" . That's my BIG BAD, sorry feller's and sorry Mr. Buckles.

Well , I will buy some new ones next time I go to Car Quest, I need some anyway. I 'll post a pic of what they look like in the TB Sticky.

For now , I'll describe them a little better. If you know what a shotgun barrel cleaning kit consists of, port cleaners look like that long barrel cleaning brush , but a little heavier and shorter . The port cleaners I usually get come in a three pack - 3 different sizes...

Damn, I hope you didn't tare your kids or nephews school project apart to clean your plenum ports - crap , I feel terrible about this. I'll get a pick of them ASAP.

hahaha.Yes those are pipe cleaners actually i didnt know you mentioned them before. i only used them because i had a big bundle laying around in the garage. i was debating on it i should use one of those port cleaners but i didnt want to mess up the ones in my gun cleaning kit. but anyways, i went to the dealer this morning and they didnt have either one of the parts i needed so they had to order them from another dealer and i have to go pick them up at 2:30. which sucks because this little project is now probably going to take me all day

Cool , then I'm off the hook

Yea , well, at least you caught that PCV system problem before it became a problem on the road - They do eventually dry out and fracture on there own when old - 10 years is old ...

I'm curious - Does the kit you ordered come with the 90 degree elbow that plugs into the manifold ?

What does Ford charge for the PCV - assembly? Oh , does it include the insulator foam tube as well? What comes with ?

Thanx

90 degree elbow? im not sure what you are talking about. the egr just came with the egr itself. but i bought that from o'reilly so that could be why.

the pcv was like $30 i think, and it better have the foam insulator. im not sure what all comes with it, i just told the guy at the parts place that i need a pcv. lol the egr bolt i had to get also was like $16. thats a freakin rip if you ask me.

Damn!! Which bolt ? The special one with the nut on the end that the DPFE,EVR bracket connects to or that 10 mm bolt closer to the firewall?

Heres what I'm talking about - The pcv system complete -

Here it is without the insulator -

brew I helped a guy with a 98 4.6 romeo and it didn't have an elbow.
The insulated tube just pluged strait in the back. If the elbo was just missing the tube sure did fit well.

mmbuckles you let brew off the hook to easy

well i picked up the parts, and yes the pcv comes with the insulation. but heres the thing. they dont make on specifically for the '98. you get to get a generic 4.6 pcv, pull off the little rubber end that goes on to the throttle body, and replace it with a small house or it will not fit. PITA if you ask me. anyways, i got everything put back together and wow. it rides so much better now. i can actually hear my AF1 again.

Not sure exactly what you mean - It would have to be a pre-bent rubber hose if your talking about the hardline that routes to the TB.

Oh well, glad it work!! That's cool!!

On my 97 the PCV hose connects on the throttle body just straight, no elbow or anything, was the new PCV line too large to seal up so you had to "couple" it?
