Ticking noise while at Idle
Ticking noise while at Idle
Hope someone can help with this. I have a 2004 Supercrew F150 Lariat. Its in good condition and runs very smooth, no problems. Only thing s at idle theres a ticking noise. Some people have said it sounds likea sticking valve. I dont know a whole lot about maintenance other then the normal things. If it is a sticking vavle, what does that cause and is it ver bad. How do i get it fixed wether it be a sticking valve or something else. thanks for all your help.

Not sure, how can i tell if its either of the 2 you mentioned. and how serious of a problem are they thanks ,
my 05 does the same thing. You can hear it a lot more especially when you are in a drive-thru when you are up against the wall. I took mine into the dealer and they said it wasn't a valve, but that it was a normal noise with these trucks. He gave some explanation, but I cant remember, but he did say that it was normal and nothing to worry about. I'd rather it not do it because now that I've heard it, thats all I listen for. Wish I could get it to go away, but as long as its not hurting anything I guess Im ok with it.
From what I gather reading other posts on here, if it's just a slight ticking sound, it's probably the fuel injectors and is completely normal for 04+ year models. If it's a loud, almost diesel-like sound at idle, it could be the cam phasers going out. Do a search on here for cam phasers, been talked about a lot.

You know, I bought a '97 5.4L from a friend a while back and I get the same thing, it hasn't caused any trouble so I just figured it was because it is an older truck with 165,000 miles on it. Now it recently began idling very rough but I'm pretty sure that is because I need to clean the TB and MAF sensor. Probably need to replace the spark plugs too...
