4.2L Swap to 4.6L or 5.4L???
I have a 97 F-150 With a 4.2L V6 with around 200,000 miles. I know i should stay with the modular motors but im just a big fan of the 302. the parts are cheap and plentiful, if it really is best... about what kind of work will i have cut out for me if i went with the 5.4??? and im not doing the swap...im letting someone else do it for me...im kinda in the desert over here in afghani****y!! but i want the swap to be done before i get back because i need a running vehicle. I just want to make sure im not getting ripped off by the guy who im letting do the swap. If someone could give me a list of what i might need to do the swap to a bigger motor it would be very helpful and much appreciated!! Thanks for all yalls input so far
Sell your truck for whatever you can get (it won't be much) and put the sales proceeds and the money you were going to spend on the V8 into buying a truck that has the engine you want.
IMO, it is just not worth the time and effort to make this swap unless you can get the motor and labor for free or almost free.

Why did you start another thread ? I'll try to prevent you from starting another. Maybe you'll understand this.
To put a 302 in place of your modular motor you would have to GUT the cab -Nothing in the dash would work right - if at all - It's a wiring nightmare.
It's not worth it . The modulars are a better motor IMO..
Are you getting it yet?
BUT it's possible - Just about anything is..

dont put a 302 drop a 460 in there and it will run better than even the 5.4's haha
if your gonna go thrw all that crap to take out the modular stuff mine as well make it worth it

I think hes asking about putting a 5.4 in place of his 4.2 guys!
Motor/trans/driveshaft adjustment/exhaust adjustment/custom tune or 5.4 computer/trans wire-harness/motor wire harness/maybe a dash wire harness.
This is just some of the stuff I can think of.
Best thing to do is find a totaled truck for the parts. Otherwise your looking at 5 to $10,000 for someone to do it.

He keeps saying 302 - not 330 . He wants to put a 302 motor in place of a modular and hire it done from another country lol..
Oh wait !! That was in the other thread .. ? He should stick with one thread .. Right he's changed it to the 5.4L in this one.

If you are new to this site and new to the forum thing, I'm going to give you 2 pieces of advice.
1. Don't post new threads all over the place - stick with ONE thread till your issue is resolved.
2. Don't give the forum regulars a hard time when they do call you on something - lick your wounds and press on. Biting back will drastically reduce the quality of help you will get in the future, people remember things like that. It's best to check your ego at the front door.
This has been posted as a public service announcement to try to help people, not as something to chew on a particular person.

Bay far the easiest is to find a bone yard 4.2 engine and install that then sell the truck and buy the same with a 4.6.
Parts
To swap to a 5.4 you will need an engine and a tranny. The PCM from the same model year truck with a 4.6 5 speed or a 5.4 auto. I will discuss your PCM options further down. You will need the complete engine harness.
You will need the clutch and flywheel from a 97-8 4.6 with a Windsor engine, 8 bolt, VIN code 6. Make sure that your 5.4 has the engine mounts.
PCM
There are two ways of going about controlling the engine;
1- 4.6 PCM. This will have all the required parameters except the COP drivers. You will need a 4.6 same model year as your truck engine harness and coil packs. What you do is wire up the 5.4 as if it were a 4.6 using the coil pack ignition.
2- 5.4 PCM. If you use this you will need to have the PCM programmed to drop the inputs from the auto transmission. This includes the neutral start input.
Exhaust
You will need to have the exhaust modified to accommodate the location of the 5.4 collector. it is not in the same spot as the 4.2.
Misc
You can use any year engine but they will have subtle differences that you will have to over come. Your model year does not have PATS but you must use the harness from your model year as there were changes in the newer models that changed the pinout of the PCM. Sticking to your Model year harness makes sure that the communication from the PCM to the instrument cluster remains constant.
