"Normal" Oil Consumption
"Normal" Oil Consumption
I have a 2007 F150 5.4 with 13,000 miles. I am using the 5-20 oil as specified changing it every 3-4000 miles. The engine is burning (no leaks) about 3/4 quart in 3000 miles. The dealer says this is "normal". I have had several new cars and trucks over the years (including a 2000 F150 with a 5.4) and none of them have ever used any oil at 13k miles.I am curious if others are experiencing the same oil consumption. I am interested in others opinions if this is really normal.
Thanks!

Mine was using 2 qts a week thats when the clock read 35K somewhere in between i switched to synthetics and it went down 1 qt between oil changes. Now at 130K its back to 2 qts between changes regardless of type of oil used, its really worrying me now I don't see any blue smoke and no oil is leaking out. I am saving up for a replacement engine so when this one goes its no biggy. My oil stayed closer to the original color when i used synthetic oils and I changed it at 7K I would change filters 2 times b4 the next oil change and replace it again.

My 02 4.6 has used 1 qt. every 3K like clockwork since the day I bought it. Have used a variety of synthetic, conventional and part-synthetic oils in 20 and 30 weights to no avail, consumption is steady. Disappointing but I can live with it.

think the Valve guides on those cars were bad thoe
Unfortunately, you are in that grey zone of acceptable oil consumption. Not a comfortable place to reside, but not all that bad. At 13K miles, your engine is barely broken in. If it were me, I would try taking it out and running the p_ss out of it. The rings may just need a little help seating.

I have never had an engine burn a noticeable amount of oil. Even my Cobra had bad valve guides (smoke on start up occasionally) but you could barely notice it on the dipstick. Sucks man, but I guess if Ford says don't worry about, don't? If you do have a problem with it, get rid of it. I think I would have had a problem if my 07 was burning oil.

I don't see how it is normal or acceptable for a brand new engine in a brand new truck to burn or otherwise lose oil. That is surely an exception. Not a rule. I'm here to tell you that I also have a 2007, and it does not burn or lose any oil.

I didn't write the spec, I just know where to find it.
Sounds like none of you are old enough to remember engines that if they ONLY burned a quart in 1500, that was excellent.........
I'm actually a bit concerned about engines that burn NO oil between changes - if it's burning a bit I *know* the oil is getting to places it needs to get to (cylinder walls primarily).

Every engine uses some oil. You have to be able to quantify it and it has to exceed Ford's limit before they will do anything about it. 1 quart in 1000 miles is the line I got from my dealer as acceptable. I don't agree with them but am not going to lose sleep over it. My truck is much better than that, maybe about a quart per 5000 miles.

And oil change intervals were 1000 miles, and anything over 75000 miles you were on borrowed time. Unfortunately, I remember (I'm 63). Today's engines are built a lot better and wear a lot slower; of course, we also have much better oils - which is why I suggested he try to "seat the rings."
