no spring in replaced COP... lucky?

98 Expy, 5.4,4x4.

I just changed out a bad #3 COP, I was renting a garage with a lift and heat and I didnt have time to change the plug after I finally got the COP out. I took a chance and left the plug and just put in the new COP, it went in real easy but I was concerned because there was no click or anything to signify the spring going over the plug (COP was sitting flush lined right up for the screw). After I got the power block and everything else together it is running great, no miss, shudder, nothing at all. I took a look at the COP when I got home and there was no spring in it (I put it in my pocket right after pulling it), I assume it stayed on the plug and I'm just getting lucky that the old and new springs are getting along like school girls. I called my friend he said there was nothing on the floor etc. (this garage is immaculate used to restore old muscle cars). I pulled the boot off and it has a spring going over a copper section in a silver tube with a copper end (likes its pressed in), it looks like it should/sould be sitting on the end of the plug. Do Ford COP's have a spring that goes all the way to the end of the boot like the PA one I put in? I'm just wondering if there are different stype COPs that dont have a spring going all the way to the end, the one I took out was original from 1998. I replaced the O2's, 2 COPs, rebuilt the front end, replaced the broken sway bar end etc. etc., I really dont want to have to get into this thing again but if there a chance this will just screw up again I want to get it over with.
