2004 5.4L Engine Issues
2004 5.4L Engine Issues
I've had a lot of issues with this truck, but I'm not about to explain them all. My extended warranty is expired, so it's on my shoulders now to keep it running. Regardless of my troubles to date, I love my truck, but it's getting expensive to fix...
The problem:
Only when the engine is in gear, under a load, around 2500-3000 RPM the engine starts to missfire and lose significant power. There is light knocking and the sound of what you would believe to be a wire connected to the serpentine belt whipping around at high speed.
What Ford said:
The mass airflow sensor is bad, my alternator was spiking voltage at higher RPM, and the fuel rail/injectors needed to be flushed.
What I Did:
The mass airflow sensor went out after it was replaced less than two years and 20,000 miles ago. Replaced it, all four O2 sensors, the fuel filter, and I'm still having issues. The fuel rail was flushed when the mass airflow sensor went out...I'll be hard pressed to believe it needs it already.
I disconnected my alternator electrically, still has the same problem. The only thing I noticed tonight after test driving it was the fuel pump. When the ignition is turned on (but not to start), the fuel pump turns on to produce a positive fuel pressure then turns off. When mine turns itself off, it has a loud squeek as it stops.
What I Need to Know:
Any ideas? I'm about ready to take it back to Ford, because I am baffled. If the fuel pump were an issue, it SHOULD (in my mind) produce the same problem if in neutral, but it doesn't. When the truck is in neutral, everything runs like a dream.

You said you changed the fuelfilter. The first 6-8 times i turn on the ignition after changing the filter i have always had the same laud squeek your talking about. I guess its just because the pressure has not built up all the way.
yeah i've had a miss at 3k rpm and it was a coil pack, then again, sounds like it could be the fuel pump causing all your issues. there is NO way your fuel rails need flushed. get a fuel pressure gauge
yeah i've had 4 COP's go out. i thought about that, but I still figured it'd be a problem even in neutral. how would i know which one to check if it only does it in gear? the plugs should be fine, they were changed last march.
