Question 250,000 miles 5.4, may need new engine...

I have a '99 F-150 extended cab 4X4 XLT with almost 250,000 miles. I would like to start researching for a new Crate Engine possibly.

Although I have used Mobile 1 full Synthetic oil for the life of the truck, the engine has been knocking on start-up for a while now. I use Plus gas because on regular there was some serious eng. knocking while driving. At times I still hear the eng. knocking while going up hill so she may be getting closer to the end.

Is a Crate Engine with all new drivetrain the way to go?
Is there such an animal?

Thanks

If there is nothing wrong with the tranny, why replace it?

If you want a Ford replacement, I'm sure you can find them all over the internet.

The tranny has been neglected from the start meaning I have never changed the fluid:o As for the engine, I would like a complete engine and not a block that requires old parts to be reused from mine.

With that many miles you might as well send it to the yard and buy another low mileage one and run it up another 200,000 miles.

Sorry can't help on your question (much at least), although I do believe a crate engine can be had for around $4-6k. I think a remanufactured engine is probably a better way to go and I think they are around $3,000. Try Google.

But back for the reason for my reply...wow, 250,000 miles on the original tranny and no fluid changes? lol, that's quite a testament to the capability of the unit. WTG FoMoCo
