13-14mpg?!

bought a 2000 5.4L ex-cab lariat 4x4 a couple weeks back and decided to give it a run out on the road down to austin and back. much to my surprise i got around 13-14 mpg out on the road. given that i have a 4x4 5.4L i still kinda expected around 16-17 or so. just curious as to what i can expect to get out of it. im throwing a lift and 35's with 4.56's on next week, cold air k&n, superchips programmer. im not gonna be one to bitch about ****ty gas mileage out of a truck i bought to pull my boat but i do want to get the most out of it too.

Not sure about the 2000 5.4 in an F150 - my 2005 gets about 13-14 city and around 20-22 highway - but my dad's 2000 Expedition w/the 5.4L averages around 17-18 on the highway.

I have a 6" lift, 37" tires, intake and exhaust, no gears, no chip, thats it on a 99 5.4L 4x4 and im lucky to see 12 on a good day. averaging 10-12mpg. Im sure with gears, a chip...e fans and such you can see much better results.

one thing is that a winter fuel will hurt your mpg. also how may miles are on the truck, could just be time for a tune up.

Yea, winter time is not the best time to be calculating your fuel economy.

My 00 F-150 4x4 ORP SC, w/ 8' bed gets about 12-14 MPG in town, and 15-16 MPG if I stay at 75 MPH on the interstate. If I go over 75, it drops to the 13-14 MPG range. Keep it under 2000 RPMs, and it will help the fuel economy.

Spend the $$ and buy a gallon of sea foam. Run half a pint through the intake (suck it in a vacum line) and do the great smokeout routine with it to clean the top end, run 1.5 pints through with a tank of gas, make sure your filters / fluids / pressures are right, and THEN fill it up and take it for a highway run to find out what your milage would be. As old as that truck is, I am pretty sure there is LOTS of gunk on the top end of that engine and in the injectors...

BTW, your highway mileage right now is what my city mileage is...

yes the truck is due for a tune up. has 144,000 miles. and sea foam does wonders!! havent had a chance to do the intake yet but ran a pint through a half tank and a can of b-12 through a 1/4 tank.

that sounds pretty familiar. i have an 07 fx2 5.4L scab and i was getting 16-17 in may when i got it and it has steadily decreased. last time i filled it up i got 11.02 mpg. kinda scary.
anyone else btw: i now have 5,400 miles on it.

About 6,000 miles on it.

My 04 FX4 Supercab with the 5.4 is getting around 12. Stock 18" wheels with stock size tires, and no mods.

It's odd...I am a moderator on a forum for Mercury Cougar owners, and we've had a few new threads with people complaining about their gas mileage right now. Just the winter mixes of gasoline I guess.
