98 4.6L #2 Misfire

Was comming home from work yesterday and truck ran kinda goofy for a min or 2. Check engine light came on and began to flash. Flashed 39 times and then stayed on. Took it right to Autozone and they told me a #2 Misfire.

Light is still on but truck seems to be running just fine. Idles at 6-700. Runs at 2000 at 65mph. Not sluggish or anything.

Any ideas?

You saw ignition failure for that cyclinder, then it cleared.
I would suspect the coil or a boot failure or even moisture in the plug well, if it happens again.
The flashing was raw fuel getting to the cats so the injector was not the problem.
Clear the code, it's of no value now or it will clear by it'self after a long time without missfiring..

Thank you!

I was planning on doing the plugs and wires as soon as we get a day where its not so rainy out. Probably within the next week.

My buddy is a mechanic and told me to mist everything to check for arcing and I saw none.

The wires are original and the plugs are about a year and a half or about 20,000 miles old.

Original wires? It's time. If you have anything but Motorcraft platinum plugs in there, that's suspect too. If you are pushing 100k+ on the truck, your coil packs may be getting weak too. I had a miss after parking overnight in the rain (82k on original plugs/wires/coil), no CEL, misting proved nothing, wound up being the coil pack - wires and plugs didn't fix it.

Pushin 100,000, think again. She's just about to turn 134,000. Fired it up yesterday morning and the CEL was still on but zero rough idle, ran at 2000 at 72mph and no sluggish accelaration.

Left work yesterday afternoon and fired it up and the CEL was off. Maybe it's the goofy weather. Went from 20" of snow on the ground and temps around 5 to heavy rain, thunder and only the 2nd Januray tornado in Wisconson since 1884, yes 1884 along with temps of almost 60.

Oh well, problem fixed.

If the problem comes back, look at wires and coil packs.

Smile Same prob

I had the same prob. Happened a lot while driving in the rain at highways speeds. Ended up getting 2 rubber "boots" off of 2 tempos as they also have coil packs that sit up at the front of the engine. Installed the "boots" around the coil packs and have had zero issues since.

Yup, I'd look at doin' wires first. Might as well do the plugs too since yer there. Doesn't solve the problem, ya got the two coilpacks to do.
