anybody install a tank-type engine heater?

I've been wanting to put on in on my 03 Ex. I have it sitting right here in front of me (from a friend). It is a Zerostart (not sure I like that name ), 1000 watts. Instructions indicate to connect the inlet from the block drain and plumb the outlet into the heater line. Unit must be kept low down by the bottom of the engine.

Looking at a post just below this one about finding the block drain. Wondering if anyone knows where it is on the 4.6 on the psgr side? Or better yet, what thread the hole is? The kit comes with a threaded adaptor but who knows if that will fit or not?

I'm actually looking for a simpler workaround rather thanthe block drain idea. Was hoping someone figured out a better way to tap into the coolant.

thanks.

I had a tank heater on my car for years. It worked well and gave no trouble. Tank heaters though, have more potential for leaks because there are more hoses. If you install it, make sure to brace and bracket everything well to avoid vibrations.

I put a freeze plug type of heater in my 150. It's only 600 watts (cheaper to use) and works well. It was easy to install, the directions were great.

ZeroStart is a good quality product.

Where did you get the freeze plug type? I was thinking about that one too. If I have to drain the coolant anyhow, why mess with all the hoses? I've heard stories about the plugs leaking too.

Just want to have it prewarmed when I get in in the morning w/out idling. Also quicker time to full temp needing less gas to run in "warm up mode" so to speak.

I have always preffered the heaters that go in your lower radiator hose. It is as easy as tightening 2 hose clamps. But, just about any of them will do you good in the winter. IMO, if you have one there for free, put it on there. Just make sure, like stated before, it is braced good so it doesn't vibrate loose.
