Help with misfire codes P0300, P0302, P0316

Hey folks,

My 02 F-150 4x2 4.6L with 60k miles is bucking like a bronc and throwing codes P0300, P0302, P0316. I know what each code means, but I'm not sure what they mean together.

Does the P0300 mean that I'm getting misfires on multiple cylinders, or am I just getting a misfire on cylinder 2 (P0302)? I'm planning to troubleshoot by swapping injectors and COP's with a nearby cylinder, but if multiple cylinder's are misfiring this won't help.

Also, if this is a COP or an injector should I replace all of the COP's or injectors or just the faulty part? Plugs are obvious, for the cost I'd do all of them. The COP's are $50 EACH so I'd prefer not to buy 8 of them if I don't need to.

Finally, is there a good guide for changing injectors and plugs on a 4.6? The article in "Technical Articles" is for a 5.4 and states that the 5.4 is significantly different in this area from a 4.6.

Sounds like a bad injector. The first thing I would do is swap injector #2 with #3 to see if the misfire moves to #3 and produces a P0303.
The procedures you are reading about the 5.4 will apply to a '02 4.6 [the older 4.6s are different].

The idea of changing the COP's twice doesn't appeal to me, especially if I've got to ship the dead ones back and wait. If it's a bad COP I guess I'll replace this one and replace the rest if a second one fails. I lost one of my socket extensions recently so I hope it's not the plugs.

The odds of a Global COP being bad are pretty slim. It happens, but it's nowhere near as bad as Tumba is trying to make you think - you essentially have the same odds with any COP you buy.

I just bought a set of Globals 2 weeks ago and have had ZERO problems.
They work fine, a noticeable difference from the COPS I had with 160k on them.
Only use Motorcraft plugs as well.

What did you do to cause those codes ? Something happened - sounds like the motor got wet.

Anyway, your 4.6L is exactly like the 5.4L when it comes to a plug change. It's only different if your 4.6L is older than 2001 when they used coil packs on that motor instead of COP's.

With those codes you posted , I wouldn't hesitate and order the hole set for $85 over Internet. The ignition is F'ed IMO. Global has the best record with least amount of DOA coils. Do it right the first time - take this advice or you may end up pulling your hair out with this problem. I've seen all those codes come up at once like that a few times - the end resort is always the same.

Thanks for the info.

I didn't do anything to the motor, it hasn't gotten wet. It last rained here over the weekend and the truck was driven a few hundred miles before the problem developed yesterday. The only change is that it's cold, this is probably the first time this truck has been operated in sub freezing temps in several years. It'll be warm again before I get to put a wrench on it, we'll see if that has an effect.

I did some research on the Global COPs and that may be a viable solution. If it is a bad COP I'll probably put 1 motorcraft unit on this weekend and replace the rest when I can. I can't have this truck down while I wait for a shipment from EBay, I'm having a heck of a time working out of my Honda.

I wish you luck , you may get lucky - The random and multiple misfire codes are trying to tell you there spent. Those come when there's not much left of your coils windings . Looks like you'll have to replace two atleast to keep her goin.

Good Luck, you'll need it

i didn't mean to make them sound bad. as i stated i have read the debates about the cops. i have yet to need them and when i do i am going to et the global cops. i will change them out as needed whether it takes a weak or a year .
if one is bad, i will throw it away and consider myself ahead of the 1 to 2 cops the money would have bought from motorcraft.
thanks for the jab, keeps me alert
