to overdrive or not to overdrive?

ive been turning off the over drive last couple days (the little button on the shifter) and i have noticed it keeps the rpms close or right within the magic 1900-2200 RPM range. as i understand it your vehicle gets the best gas mileage within this rpm range. Ovbiously this is not a good idea on the highway, but around town and short trips where you wont get over 45-50 mph. could this possibly improve gas mileage?

Vehicles are more eficient<---spelling im drunk! at the peak of their tourqe curve. About the only thing that would change this is wind resistance. In town that isnt in play. And x2 on what Tumba said. it is way less stressful on your tranny.

So overdrive is only good on the highway? At what speed should OD be considered?

i would say turn it off anytime cruising under 55.
always turn it off when towing anything
i like to keep the rpm in the 1800 range it just feels better

OD won't engage under a certain road speed so makes little difference if on or off under that speed.
It is controlled by both throttle position and an internal mechanical govenor.
Both must be satisfied before shifting into OD, occurrs.
If you have a tach, it will tell you when OD and lockup is in or out just by the reaction to throttle application.
