Unhappy Gotta Be Freaking Kidding Me

Hello everyone I am a new owner of a 2002 F150 Harley Davidson 5.4L Supercharged vehicle.

Soooo here is my story from having the vehicle less then 1 week.

Short version is that I inherited the vehicle from my uncle that passed away and it was shipped to arizona from florida. Here is what has happened

The vehicle was delivered with the check engine light on. I took it to AutoZone and they said that I have a Lean bank 1 and 2 code.

Easy right?

This is my steps that i have done so far..first i just tried putting higher octane gas and additives in, then after all the basic checking of vaccuum hoses and cleaning the MAF sensor i got tired and i took it to a shop here locally.

They replaced all 4 O2 sensors, said try that, cleared codes, CEL came back on

went back, they changed the fuel filter, said try that, cleared codes, CEL back on.

They cleaned the MAF sensor, checked for leaks and checked all vaccuums still cant find the problem. BTW these guys are supposed to be ASE certified, Ill probably get crap for saying where i took it but i took it to a local meineke or whatever.

so 600 dollars later they tell me that they can longer find out what the problem is and i have to take it somewhere else to be diagnosed. So monday im taking it to Ford let them do there stupid 50$ diag and then hopefully we can find out WHAT THE F is happening. This is my story of my wonderful new truck haha.

Anyone have any possible Ideas?

I am going to just wing it and say that its gotta be a MAF issue or somewhere they missed a vaccum because when im at idle, not ALL the time but sometimes it will drop from 700 to 500. One time it even stalled.

Sigh......


Any thoughts?

If you have codes P0171 and P0174 the most common problem is the PCV elbows with a tear that might explain the inconsistant idle problems. The other possible cause is a intake leak.

First, your suffering from a series of events where the mechanics don't troubleshoot for the codes and understand what brings them about. Translated, means they don't work on Fords that much or they would have known.
You did not give the P codes but based on what you did give, the codes should be P0171 and 174.
The ASE mechanics should have the definations of these codes and could have looked at the PCM with their good scanners and saw what was happening , then chased down the possible causes instead of guessing.
There is no winging it on these modern computer controlled motors.
Basicly they missed an excess air leak into the intake at some point causing the OX sensors to 'try' to correct it but can't without taking the short term fuel trims out of limits and setting the fault codes.
Since the fault is common to both banks, you get two codes.
Your biggest problem is finding a shop that knows the system and testing procedures.
Running a blower motor too lean is a no-no.
Good luck, the dealer should know all this.

well i feel like a total jag-off now..... crap. i guess ill wait to see what ford says

I agree with torkum. You should ask them to check that "boot" that connects from the PCV valve to the back of the intake. They are known to degrade,split, etc. causing unmetered air to enter the mix.

You may save them time and you $$$$$.

Yep, das-boot -





If that by chance that doesn't cure the problem , it has to be the MAF or lower intake gaskets (leaking)

When both banks test positive for lean conditions, it's one of those three issues above for the most part. However, a bad fuel filter or regulator can contribute as well..

so i took the truck to ford, they found the leak, it looks like it is in the lower passanger area of the engine, probably a intake gasket, they said 650+ to get in there cause they have to take off the supercharger and yada ya......

There ya go. Your paying mainly for labor and expertise.
Worth the cost and you find out having these things sometimes has it's down side when something goes wrong.
It's a bit different situation when the lower intake is under positive pressure as well as vacuum. Gaskets get pulled on both ways.
Consider it one of those risks of owning.
