Angry Error Codes - Sluggish Excel. (Stall) SOB!

2000 Expedition 4x2 5.4L 90,000mi - Stock

Error Codes 0171 and 0174

So I searched the forum for the codes a few days ago and decided to buy a new MAF, 02 Sensors all 4, PCV hose, ERG valve, ERG Sensor, installed new Fuel Filter, and something else ERG related. Only after not finding ANY of the MAIN COMMON LEAKS people post about!

Codes disappeared and have not returned. Everything was smooth for 1 whole day, where as I then made the mistake of throwing on my boat and taking her to the lake. ONLY, to have her crap out on me, Yippie!

What do I mean by crapping out? Well she is starting fine and running well while in park, I can rev her up and nothing really seems to stall out or putter. HOWEVER, as soon as I throw her into gear and drive around she boggs down. She won't excelerate to save her life and will basically just putter along until she stalls completely.

Now, I have checked for the most common leaks and problems, MAF, gasket leaks and what not but this symptom is killing me! The guy at AutoZone said it could be a my cats and I should disconnect them and see how it runs? Does this sound right?

A - Should I clean my injectors?
B - Install new sparks?
C - Could it be my IAC again?

Any suggestions are welcomed!

I would suspect the IAC. Pull it off, turn it over and make sure that little shaft
is moving freely. Try cleaning it with some carb cleaner.

It is misfiring or just simply stalling out? If it's not misfiring or running rough, it's got to be one of those sensors.

Just my .02

Probably not the IAC. If it idles fine then your problem is elsewhere. Your cats could be bad, you could have a clogged fuel filter as well

I hope it's not the IAC, that would be the second time it has turded out on me.

Now to answer your first question when I am driving around it makes a slight popping sound, could that be backfiring? It is not really idling rough when I first start it up but as soon as I drive it around for a min to two and return to park it will putter and shake the car a little bit at idle. Which is weird right? Why would it start up fine but fudge up after it's put into gear and driving around?

So that's where we are now.

Well now that is a bit different, I'm guessing it could be the COP's. Are they original? along with the plugs? You haven't gotten a code for the misfire yet, but it's probably around the corner. Once it starts to idle and run badly, sit there and let it, see what other codes come out of it. Certain aspects have to happen an X amount of times before the fault code is thrown. Your lean codes are a seperate issue I would guess. Where's jbrew...he usually has some good ideas....

What are COP's? LOL..

Since I don't exactly know what they are I am going to say NO they have never been changed.

BTW, the scanner I am using is one I rented from O'Reilly's. So far it has not picked up any codes.

So apparently I need to go clean injectors and replace sparks for todays lil experiement?

Well just throwing pieces at it and hoping they work is not the best way to go about it, nor the cheapest. Chances are one or more of your COP's (Coil on plugs) is bad. It happens and is a very common problem of a sputtering or misfiring engine. A quick search will net you more than enough reading material to last you through the rest of this year!

If you have the original plugs still in there at 90k, change them, and use OEM Motorcraft. Being that you seem not to mind throwing parts at it, a new set of COP's for $96 from Global on Ebay wouldn't hurt, also get a BIG tube of dielectric grease if you plan on changing plugs and/or cops.

Easiest way to clean the injectors is with a can of BG44K in the gas, if you can find some.

Problem Fixed.

Just so others who search this topic will have an answer, the problem was a faulty fuel pump and some corroded headlight connectors.

She is running smooth now!

I'm glad your not my doctor! I might have my head changed a couple times.
Nice isn't it when you guess at everything and spent more than it would cost to have a good shop do the work the first time.
