I guess now you know why your father-in-law was a mechanic and not an electrician . From personal experience I know you can jump start a 98 3/4 ford w/the powerstroke diesel with a 96 honda civic, the honda didnt like it but it did it, my buddy and I thought it was funny because each of the 2 batteries in his truck were almost as big as the engine in the honda.

As long as it is 12v it'll work...

Heck, we've got a battery charger with 4 different settings on it, and it is tiny... but it's got some crazy cranking amps in the jumpstart mode.

All those boxes do is put a surface charge on the battery through the constant 12v to the cigarette lighter or power point. They work when it is warm outside and the battery in the vehicle still has enough charge to latch the solenoid. Basically if you left your light on while you were in the store then those boxes work, if the lights were on overnight you will need a jump.

Yup your in law is set'n you up man! I just jumped my 07 with my Gf's 07 Jetta...no problem. Beyond that I use to own a Peterbilt and jumped it with my old 99 Sonoma countless times never a problem.
As far as my battery in my truck I'm taking it in this week to see whats up.

*- Don't even get me started.

He says absolutely not. The truck's draw from the booster car's alternator will be too strong and will fry the booster car's alternator.

I have never heard of such a thing. I think it does make sense to some degree, but I would think you would have to be constantly cranking the dead car to do such damage to the booster car's alternator.

Thoughts?

PS- I just bought a new battery. My other one was 3 years old anyways and probably needed to replaced.

Ya, I call BS on this one...

Lets say the alternator in your wifes car is to week to jump your truck... The engine will be running in your wifes car and you jump your truck, the alternator in your wifes car will supply up to its capacity, lets say 100 amps. Now lets say your truck needs 200 amps to crank and start the engine. All that will happen is that the battery in your wifes car will supply the difference. 100 amps from her alternator and 100 amps from her battery. After your truck starts and you remove the jumper wires, her alternator will recharge her battery...

Now, I'm not mechanic, but I have been a master electrician for 11 years now, this is basic electrical theory...

I wouldn't suggest jumping another battery unless you know exactly why the one battery is low. If you left the lights on or something that you know why the battery is dead, you can jump it. If you don't know why it's dead, don't jump it. If the dead battey has an open cell, when the dead car starts, the alternator of the dead car will throw maximum amps at the donor car- not into the battery. It will fry the donor cars alternator. If you will ask any alternator rebuild shop what spiking an alternator means, they'll give you a ten minute explanation of it. And with todays high amp output alternators, it doesn't take much to spike one including a bad connection at the jumper cable.

I just jumped my truck with my car the other day. The battery was completely dead, I had to have the cables on it for a few minutes to get it to start. The car is my 1995 Pontiac Bonneville with over 213K miles and still on the original alternator Been driving it since with no issue.

Whos paying for your wifes pride and joy anyhow? As far as he SHOULD care, if your paying for it, than you fry your alternator, and run it into a tree all day if thats what you dam well please.

Infinity G35 battery/alternator = 550CCA/110A
F150 battery/alternator = 540CCA/110A

Next time you see that inlaw daddy of yours, smack him in the head with a slimy wet leather glove.
