I personally put 5w20 mobil fully synthetic in my 02 5.4l. On a oil change i put 6 qt. and usually fire it up and add another half qt...... !
Question... i have over 70k on the motor now, should I be using a higher weight of oil as the engine gets older?

I specificly looked at an official Motorcraft oil filter and capacity chart this afternoon.
The truck capacities for 2004 to 2007 specify 7 qts.
All earlier motors are 6 qts.
All this info can be found on the Motorcraft website for oil weights, filter # and capacities for all Ford motors back to the mid 90s.

I you are going to use 5w30 for an older vehicle go with 6 Qt. If you decide to switch to 5w20, go with the 6.5 Qts to 7 Qts. I know for a fact that When Toyota made the switch to 5w 20, While using the same 4 cyl engine (2AZ-FE), they increased the oil capacity for the same engine from 4 Qts to 4.6 Qts. Something to do with the viscosity of the oil.
Personally, if I had an older vehicle calling for 5w30 and I want to make a switch to 5w20, I will add an extra 1/2-qt.

More likely at the time Toyota made the change to 5w20 that they also enlarged the oil pan.

You can use any of the brand name 5W20s and you'll be fine. I researched this subject and found that the Motorcraft oil does the best in the Tritons. But Ive used all kinds of different oils in it, right now Im running Redline 5W20.
If it is between the lines, LEAVE IT ALONE. Let her get to the bottom and put a quart in'er.
New model 5.4L's call for 7 quarts (6.6L) with filter change. This is in the manual, and on the computer system at the dealer that the Techs use for reference. Drain it dry, plug it, and drop 6 Qts in... Start it for a min, stop and add another.. you are good to go!
I was searching trying to figure this out for sure, and everywhere I went it came up 7qts.
Oh page 292 in the manual for easy research.
