Idle problems. What I have done so far.

I have a 99 v6 w/137.000 miles. About six month I decided that I did not want a new truck payment. So I started to refresh some of the old parts. I replaced upper and lower rad hosed, belt, water pump, themo, spark plugs and wires. kept all the old ones for spares. Two weeks ago the abs light goes on. I first changed the front pads and fresh fluid. The light was still on. Next I cleaned behind the rotors w/ air and power washer. The ABS light still stayed on. This week my check engine light came on along w/ the abs light. I went to read the codes. I got po0401 and Po0404. I chanded the front o2 sensors and the engine light turned off for 2 days. After It came back on the codes had changed to 701 and 704. So I sprayed/cleaned the MAF sensor and got a new air filter. The light turned off but the truck is still not idleing the way it should. It idle droppes to 500 rpms if I am stopped at a light for over 2 minutes. it does not turn off it just dropes the rpm to 500 then raises to 900 rpms. So last night I read about the DPfE sensor. So I changed it this morning with a new one form the dealer. It still does not edil the way it should. While I was at the dealer I picked up a speed sensor for the rear diff. That fixed my dash abs light. But I still have the idling problem. Can you guy give my suggestions on what I should try next. Sorry for the long post but I need your help. Ben

I would start by replacing the Idle Air Control valve (IAC).

Today I found a cracked vacum hose. Its the hose that is after the pcv at the y connection. I changed it and it still did not idle right. After my last post I went to check around the engine. I found the stock air intake was loose near the tb. I most likely caused it when I was changing the cracked hose. Hope that was what was also causing my idle problems. How long does it take for the cpu to relearn the idle? Thanks Ben

My truck had the same idle problem...check your intake air control valve (IAC) Mine was 50 bucks for a new one, but you can clean them too if your short on funds.

I have already dumped about 300.00 to fix this problem. I figure in the long run that I have piece of mind that there new. As for the (IAC) if did not fix the idle with a new hose and intake leak. That is most likely what I will replace next. I been telling myself that it cheaper that making a new truck payment. Thanks Ben

my 97 4.6L always idles at 500RPMs. when i have the heat on it kicks up when they click on jumps to 800 then slowly back to 500. just thought it was normal. my friend hates that it idles to low but oh well less gas burning while sitting

Your truck is seriously F'ed up lol . There not suppose to run that low - Mine would stall at 500.. Between 700-750 is normal - other than that , you have some problems with it - that's not good..I would get it looked at.
