When was the last time wires and plugs were replaced? Is there a check engine light? Excetra, excetra!

All things that will be asked before we will ever have any TRUE advise.

This is definitely the place to go for trouble shooting. Let us know.

Bad spark plugs? Dirty fuel filter? mass air flow sensor going bad? Fuel pump? When I had my 1989 Mustang 5.0 the fuel pump was giving me similar issues where it would sputter with a decrease in power and then drive fine for a while and then do the same. I agree with the previous post. It could be one of several things.

And don't forget the coil on plugs, the 99 4.6's had them did they not? If no, how bout a wire or coil pack? Just sounds like mine when a coil or coils were going bad.

A 99 4six sported coil pacs. If it's leaking back there on #4 (NOT #8) blow out the cylinder hole and clean and re seal the wires. If you have COP's , you have a 5.4L.

4 8
3 7
2 6
1 5

Front is facing down and #4 is on the passenger side.

The stealership told me one of my coils is bad and wants to charge me $450 to replace it. A hundred+ for the coil, a hundred+ for labor, and a hundred+ to reprogram the computer. MY question is, is this somethin I can do myself? 2002 4.6L

Buy a set of the GLOBAL COP's and do it yourself. Only be 100$ that way. you can do a search for them on here and get all of the links.

:edited:

Disconnect the battery for the amount of time you are replacing your COP's and the PCM will be reset. Then treat yourself to a night out on the town. You will have just saved 350 bucks.

X2 on what Keith said. Is the dealership telling you the PCM has to be reprogrammed because of the COPS being changed?

Yeah, the stealership said they would have to reprogram the PCM to accept the new coil. I figured disconnecting the battery would reset it. Thanx guys. I'll get'er done myself.

One more question(off topic). How do I get my picture to shaow in my sig? Do I have to have a certain amount of posts?

These are the types of things that give dealerships a bad name - such as stealerships. Unbelievable. It's times like this that you want to force the service manager to explain the entire process they go through to "reprogram" the PCM. "Ummm, well, see, we disconnect the battery, and ummm, then do some other doohickey type things." What a joke.

Well, they WILL reset the PCM. They just reset it by going through their OBD reader. Thus, charging you to hook the cable up to the port and hitting a button. As far as REPROGRAMING it, I don't really see the need just for COP's. Just my opinions.
