AF1 or AIRAID I have read are some of the ones that will not give you a CEL. I believe I saw that the K&N has had some members with CEL's. I have read that Magnaflow is a good choice for cat backs.
I drive the little 4.2 V6. I live in The City. A bigger engine would not serve me when city blocks are no more than 100 yards and any gain that I get is only a gain to the next red light. Daytime traffic is stop & go at best, and at nights there is practically a flashing red at every intersection.
I have Airaid installed.
Gains? I don't know.....can't tell when I have to brake as soon as I accelerate.
Mileage? It all sucks when you drive in severe conditions.
It takes me up to 60 minutes to travel the 9 - 11 miles that I commute. With just sitting there and idling, I can burn up a gallon of gas in each direction. Yep - I use up to 2 gallons to travel less than 25 miles. I burn up 10 gallons just going to work. My commute in idling traffic nets me a decent 12 mpg during the work week. Luckily, a 27 gallon tank provides enough fuel to last me from paycheck to paycheck.
According to Ford, the recommended service interval for severe condition oil changes is at 3,000 miles, 3 months, or 200 hours of engine use. You guys who are waiting 5,000 - 7,500 per oil change are so lucky.
But I have taken road trips. On wide open roads where I can just cruise for several hours, I've gotten up to 24 mpg. Just an Airaid, smaller aftermarket muffler, and tonneau cover. My other accessories don't add to performance and mileage gains. Nobody has ever credited a toolbox with horsepower. Nerf bars and a grille guard have never never gotten more miles on a tank of gas. When was the last time that a leveling kit & add-a-leaf contributed to quarter mile times?
The best thing for me is a bus pass, and an alarm clock to wake me up an hour earlier to catch the bus.

ya dont expect to much but i know what your saying. the CAI pays for it self slowy over time. i love my 77 didnt throw a code for me but all trucks are diff. id go with what they say on here...they know there stuff wish i had found the site before i statrted moding. and fifty 150 leaf springs can help you in the 1/4 mile...if you need traction
Maybe it's just me. But it's a truck. Not a sports car. Why do guys race trucks on the track? I just don't get it. I've had trucks all my life. I've never wanted to race them. When I feel the need for speed, I drive one of my little fast cars.
