2000 5.4 stalls

i have a 2000 150 with 5.4l and have been having trouble with it stalling out. when i start the engine it will run for a few seconds then stall out, i start it a few more times it does the same thing. after about 5 tries it started up and ran. it seems to run better after it has been running for a while. i was thinking that it might be the fuel pumpm on it's way out, maybe not putting out enough pressure. or maybe dirty injectors, i was going to try running a bottle of injector cleaner through when i am down by auto store. any other ideas of what it could be???

thanks for any help
kevin

My 2001 did kind of the same thing. It would idle really rough and would stall out on me, and finally the check engine light came on (code p1507) which is the Idle air control valve. I bought a new one and put it on and ever since it has ran great!

It is probably a good Idea to change the fuel filter as well...it is an easy and cheap thing to try first.

Depends on the year motor, but on my 2k 5.4 it is on the back of the throttle body towards the firewall....looks like a "J" shaped alum. piece with a single elec connection, just do a quick search on here, jbrew has a bunch of info on how to take care of that and in what order.

Sorry assumed he had done the obvious first. I'm still chasing down my cold idle problem...

Here is where it is at on a 2001 5.4L:

This is what the inside should look like :

You can clean your existing one easy enough, it is 2 8mm socket head bolts ( maybe 10 mm ? ) and remove from the back of the throttle body.

You can clean it with 90% rubbing alcohol and q-tips. I did mine 2 times before replacing it. I don't think JMC has replaced his yet, he just keeps cleaning his.

went to change fuel filter today and was expecting a hex type connection, but found a metal clip with a tab that was holding the line on, i wasn't sure how to disconnect the line so i didn't. do i just squeeze the tab down with pliers to relaese it or do i need a special tool to release the line?

You need to get yourself a service manual - most auto supplies carry them.

You disconnect that and then you need a special tool to release the filter from the line. Sometimes they can be PITA Also relieve fuel pressure b4 you disconnect it!!!

There is this cool link at the top of every forum page, called Technical Articles ( 5th from the left ).

One of them in the list is: Fuel Filter Replacement Instructions :
