thanks a lot for suggestions & responses

changed fuel filter tonight - had only been changed once before for all 84K miles in this trucks lifespan (about 40K miles ago)

judging by a 15 min test drive the problem is fixed... engine sounds & runs much better

the engine failing to stay running was an intermittent and short lived problem for past two weeks. last night it appeared that it was there to stay

it may not be fixed yet. just improved so it can operate better
Do some searches and other maintanance procedures.
if you run into a problem you don't understand just post it in this thread and someone will help.

you're right Tumba... not fixed yet

so far have replaced fuel filter and cleaned MAF valve

tonight tried to start start truck... it fires up then dies right away... only way to keep it running is to apply gas to keep RPM's up above 600.... as soon as I let off gas pedal the RPM's fall so low the engine dies

so it seems to be an intermittent problem and has gotten worse in the past couple of weeks... only time it has happened so far is at night when the temperature drops and when there seems to be more moisture in the air

does this sound like it could be the idle air control valve - will clean this tomorrow - what else could it be

thanks

Yup! these trucks will idle @ 600 RPM , you just can't here it running when it does - I'm serious - been there when I forgot to take a temp vac plug off and it got sucked into the IAC .. Anyway if she won't idle above 600 RPM it's definitely a stuck IAC.

When you clean , its best if you have compressed air to assist. You can force WD40 in areas needed to free it up. WD40 will not hurt the IAC , but harsher chemicals can. After you spray the lubricant/cleaner ( Deep Creep made by SeaFoam is best - that stuff lubes and cleans at the same time) your going to have to work the mechanical's with a screwdriver or a small pair of needle nose pliers to loosen her up good..

Good Luck
