p0401 and Performance
p0401 and Performance
No this isn't another "how can I fix my p0401" thread.
Ive had the code for the past couple days. Yes, I know I need to go buy a new sensor from the dealer..eew...Anyways, TB is clean, EGR valve is good, its just the Dud of a sensor I got from O'reilly. Here's what I wanna know. When the CEL is on (with p0401 in particular), does it have an affect on engine performance/mileage? I've heard from a few people that when the CEL is on, regardless of how big/small the problem, your vehicle won't run to it's full potential. I'm asking this because I don't want my mileage/performance to suck but I'm kinda broke until payday (next Friday) so I won't be able to replace the DPFE this week.
As always, thanks

The EGR system with all that goes on, will be taken out of operation if any failure is detected.
The results of this is a loss of fuel mileage for the most part as far as drivability is concerned.
Reason is, when EGR is called to operate the fuel is cut back and ignition timeing is advanced. This is the fuel saving part of the operation.
The other part and the reason the system is there by law, is to reduce combustion temps under light throttle cruise conditions where the motor spends the most operating time in the long term. This reduces emissions of nitrogen oxides as a pollutant.
Otherwise you won't normally have any drivability problem or harm.
Note; This is why there is no advantage to removing the EGR system for normal use. It does not interfere with performance because it is never called to work at idle, under acceleration or above about 7/8 throttle.
